The Shittiest Camera in The World!
« on: April 28, 2023, 02:46:31 am »
You've guessed it, it's a medical grade dual-lenses "Colon Spy Cam". Be grateful I've salvaged this lil bad ass vison outta my crap for fame!

Background Story: Routine medical checkup. 1) Swallow cam with water, 2) strap and carry a receiver around your neck, until, well, you crap the cam out.
Camera takes 5 (five) HD pictures every 10sec., until the battery runs out I'm guessing.
There. Thought I'd share the unusual EE stuff that comes out of my arse with you all. Enjoy having a good laugh at it  :palm:

I'm sure he did. That thing is quite large.  :scared:

You'd think that the lens would "get dirty" on it's little journey through the body and all you'd see was a smudge.

You'll be prescribed a special diet, mostly white food, and some water soluble powdered drink to take in the day prior to completely flush out the colon. They don't want tiny bits of dark coloured food, seeds etc showing up and camouflaging the things they are looking for.

Spot-on, Doc! They have you on military grade hyper-laxative 24hrs before, show you 4 wonderful visuals(!!) of what you'd expect liquid crap to look like after 6-12hrs, and hope you'll be flushed, clean and glamourous for the great crap-spy-cam swallowing event!!! You are also given some 200gr of powder diluted in a two liter bucket of water (drunkmuch). I've been told it is an 'electrolyte'. Go figure that one out...

For the record: the cost of this one-time-use shitty cam alone is US$1,343.00 (*unofficial*). As claim/told by my M.D.

Press #1 if you want me to crack it opened and snap HD pics of its intestine! 1111Going to do it anyway... look for updated pics soon.

So if you have a choice between swallowing a capsule endiscopy pill (bowelcam) or, having a full blown colonoscopy...? Clue, the latter is not something a normal person volunteers for.

Someone could make a buttload of money if they repackaged it and passed it off as new. Many times over maybe....

As an older person, I have had colonoscopy a few times.  The first was with sedation, and all the subsequent ones were without sedation. I far prefer the latter.  If your gastroenterologist can't do it almost painlessly, you probably need a better colonoscopist.  It's also fun to watch while conscious, and you can be sure the scope is inserted all the way to the ileocecal valve.  In fact, there used to ba a promotion where the speaker claimed to be getting colonoscopy while presenting the promotion.  NB:  There are bowel conditions for which that is not true, and those patients need sedation.

I have been told that in the US less than 25% get the procedure without sedation and in Europe, that ratio is reversed.  I have found that in the US, some of the nurses are so used to giving sedation that I have had to remind them that I do not get it.  There will be an IV inserted for emergency access, if needed.

Several years ago, "spiral CT" was promoted as an alternative.  As I recall, it was almost as good, but I don't know the current status. (https://pubs.rsna.org/doi/10.1148/radiographics.20.2.g00mc14419 )

As for the "volunteering" aspect, almost all patients remember vividly the bowel prep (cleansing) more than the procedure.  Unfortunately, after a certain age, one does not have a choice of whether to get the osmotic oral prep or the enema prep.

As the token 'poverty' stricken engineer, here, I've found that, in medical related things, almost never worry about a bit of discomfort.  Required, here, to procure a 'trustworthy' driver ($80 US), or a friend or relative to transport home, and no taxicabs permitted!
When it's next month's food cash, that transport fee comes right out of several meals !
Not precisely complaining personally, as my housing providers place has high value and neighborhood quality (>> 1 million $).
   Thanks for the factoid, jpanhalt.

Without sedation, you can drive yourself.  That was my impetitus for the first time without it.

It would be very interesting to eat some corn on the cob along with it, and make a time lapse of the individual grains being transformed into… well, shit.

My doctor never mentioned no sedation (and no driver) as a an option.   FWIW.

Some doctors don't want to be watched to be sure they do a complete job.  ;)  The real reason is they probably don't want to be presented with a patient who might change his/her mind.  It's easy to convert, but that delays the assembly line for the next patient.

My doctor and I have had some great discussions during the procedure.

For that price you would think they would be re-usable. But then again getting the next patient over the yuck factor would be difficult. I laughed at my father's shocked face when I told him the colon-scopes were reused, after he just got the exam. He assumed they would be chucked into the trash. No dad, just a little washing up water and they are back up someone else's ass.

The problem with just using a camera is, what if some polyps are present?  What if a non-polyp but suspicious area is present?  Everyone has diverticula, which increase with age, but a lot of people and a high percentage of elderly get a few biopsies done during the procedure.  Using the camera alone may increase the average cost per patient depending on age, of course.  It also requires the patient to go through 2 bowel preps.  Avoiding that should be considered, even if the net cost is less.

What is needed is a micro, remote controlled gerbil/crawler that can collect biopsies.  Some of the popular, high-volume gastroenterology practices in the US collect a minimum of xx biopsies, just to satisfy patients and allay their fears.  I don't subscribe to that practice, but a few random biopsies during almost every colonoscopy is pretty benign.
