Ugliest car of all time.

A few years ago I heard a discussion on the radio about classic cars and one person asked the expert what "new" cars would become a classic.  He said the Aztek !

The bad part, they were pretty popular at some point.
Inside they are pretty comfy, but they drive like a wet piece of newspaper (we would say).
You just feel 30 years older.

The outside, brrrrrrr, shivers down my spine, the horror.

An Aussie love/hate classic was the Leyland P76, it's claim to fame was you could put a 44 gallon drum in the boot. To date I haven't had to do that yet with a car.
Whoah! Watch where that landed we might need it later.

Me either.

At my first full-time job, somebody had one and they locked their keys inside.  I was asked if I could help open it - so I said I'll have a look.  Turns out it was the easiest exercise I'd ever tried.  The gap between the body and door was so great you could almost get your hand through.

I nominate the Airflow Chrysler:-

Of course, Chrysler proved in recent years that they can still make ugly cars:-

You might not like the styling, but it doesn't have that "bits of several cars, randomly stuck together" quality of the truly awful.

They were popular in New Zealand, as you could put two spare sheep in the boot.

You are quite right. It's just every time I see one, it makes me cringe. I don't know how anyone can look at one and think "oh gee, that looks great". Subaru's make me cringe too but I think it's more to do with the people that tend to be behind the wheel than anything else.

As for the "randomly stuck together", there are large amounts of those cheap, Chinese brands popping up here now. Great Wall, Chery, SAIC and Foton are probably among the more common ones. They aren't necessarily ugly, just generally very plain and generic looking. You can really tell the manufacturers have just rummaged through any old parts bin and slapped it together. I drove a Chery once, never again. It takes tinny, rattly and unsafe to a whole new level.

Apart from the Pajero sport, the next ugliest car on Australian roads at the moment would probably have to be the Nissan Juke. It's just so "bulbous" in all the wrong ways.

There is a better version for elderly people.

Quote
The Rover James.

The dashboard was simplified by Jeremy who ripped out the original dashboard and it replaced it with one of his own. The new dashboard has a hot and cold button for the air-conditioning and three light switches to toggle the wipers, lights, and radio (which has only one station) on and off. He also added a rear fog light switch which "does absolutely nothing". Clarkson also installed a simplified sat-nav system (which is a modified iPad) which has only the options: home, bingo, post office, Peggy's house. A big magnifying glass was also installed in the front.
While Jeremy was smashing the dashboard,Richard suggested that, since "elderly people are fragile and tend to sit quite far forward",the driver and passenger SRS airbags should be removed. However, after Clarkson opened the the passenger airbag compartment, they found that it was attached to two wires(beige and blue),and presumed that cutting the wrong one would result in the airbag detonating. After a very tense moment,Jeremy clipped the blue wire, which caused nothing to happen,to their relief. Presumably, the airbag was placed in the rear bumper as part of Richard's backup system.
Jeremy also modified the speedometer for the car in an attempt to speed old people up when driving. He replaced the traditional speedometer with the ones that only read 32 km/h, as opposed to 210 km/h in the old speedo.
Richard painted the Fiat beige, one that matches the colour of a hearing aid.

Richard also implemented new 'old people' specific safety features. First, he changed the front bumper of the car so that it was now much larger and made of very thick foam. He installed external airbags onto the rear so that they would detonate if the old person was about to back into an object (much to Jeremy's disappointment when this system was tested). He also put a squeaky ball under the brake pedal.
Hammond also softened the suspension of the Fiat.
A Rover grille was incorporated on the front of the design, as opposed to the original facade.
Clarkson replaced the foreign Fiat badges with a 'more appropriate' Rover badge and bolted a pet cage to the roof of the car.
Since elderly people are unable to lift their luggage into the boot, the presenters added a "lift-knob", which allowed luggage to be attached to it, and dragged along the way.
Both presenters also made modifications to the seats of the cars changing the standard Fiat rear seats to soft lounge chairs from - Shackletons (thanks to an old advert Jeremy found on YouTube). The front seats were also made waterproof, thanks to Hammond who managed to found the appropriate waterproof cloth for the seats. They also attached a new car locating system to the Rover James in which a rocket and a balloon are used to determine the location of the car in a parking lot.
As a final modification Jeremy installed a self destruct mechanism to the car which would detonate should an eldery person begin travelling down the wrong way on a slip road.

Awful mental image there, but I think that was the intent!

Great story though. Clearly the guys at Top Gear put much more thought into that car than Fiat did.

Multipla is one of the ugliest on the outside but quite specious and comfortable on the inside for a mom/city car.

My entry is the Evoque convertible. Not so ugly from the esthetic viewpoint, but it's impracticality trumps all.
Second row of seats is unusable, which is common with convertibles, but it's not even a hard top. Being an SUV means it doesn't grip to the road well, so you basically got the worst of both worlds - SUVs and convertibles.
Not to forget the hefty price tag.

the Nissan Juke.
Funny thing about these cars. It is obviously targeted towards the young people. With its funny look and happy ads. And it is a crossower, so it is obviously bought by the elderly people, because it doesn't have back breaking ride, and it is not very expensive like a SUV. For some reason they just like the crossovers. Especially the Dacia Duster, which is almost this ugly, but a lot cheaper.

Talking about under-motorised, these things come with a 1.5 dCi 85 Horsepower turbodiesel for high speed chases, and enough acceleration to make me as a prius owner cry, if this thing is before me. And it is very safe with 3 star ncap. Good for people without common sense and taste.

Unlike these funky looking crossovers, I can understand the need for a Duster. It's a dirty cheap off road-ish SUV, with a lot of space. Only thing strange is the very weak engine selection. Not sure how it even runs with 1.5l/85HP.

The Pajero is bletcherous. The first time I saw it from a distance I thought it must have been one of those new Chinese imports.

On the Nissan, while I was in the UK recently having lunch with an old school friend of the wife, we got talking and I casually referred to the Nissan "Joke" (as I thought it must have been). Chuckle, ha ha. Until we got to the car park after lunch and she unlocked hers... oops.. Still, the first time I saw an EA Falcon I commented it must have been designed by a work experience student from the sheltered workshop and that offended the owner too. Compared to the bulbous pregnant roller-skates that pass for cars these days it's not so bad.

On two wheels, the Ducati 999 was a face only a mother could love also. That's what you get when you send a South African to do an Italians job.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though, and I'm sure someone thinks these many examples are wonderful in some way or another.

A ham radio friend had an Aztek.  He took a lot of crap until he got rid of it.  My stepdaughter has a Cube.  Easy in and out but small and uncomfortable for bigger people.  I happen to like the rear end of my wife's 2012 Sonata limited. I tell her it's almost as sexy as hers. >:D

I have to say that the cars Halcyon has been posting strike me as the most offensive.  Its like they exist in the uncanny valley of design - not quite ugly enough to be dismissed as a joke.

Such designs scare me on an instinctual level.  I'm not sure the people who designed these cars even realize the design is bad; and the idea that someone can unknowingly produce something so awful is concerning.

If a car is too ugly it just wraps around and becomes quirky or funny.

A big part of the PT Cruiser's truly ingenious ugliness is the fact that it looks like a shortened hearse, especially when viewed from the back:

Which is really funny given the thing's attraction to the older demographics.....

Friend has an African Grey parrot, called Morticia. When moulting she plucked out all the feathers from her rear, leaving only a grey body, a bulbous backend and a beak at the other, just like a PT cruiser. Just as ugly as the PT as well.

BTW, there were a few PT cruiser hearses here as well, though last I saw of them they were all broken, and sitting in the Doves parking lot.

A big part of the PT Cruiser's truly ingenious ugliness is the fact that it looks like a shortened hearse [...]
But even that was done before much, much better :)

Come out to play-ay...

The trabant is at least one that really smells ugly (still 2 stroke).

In this list I miss the US postal car:

The Trabant; although I hear it has a cult following nowadays.
Kinda looks like something Mr Pininfarina did on the cheap after he finished the Wolseley 24/80 / Austin Freeway and Peugeot 404.

The car goes into the boat?

That reminds me of the famous North Korean spy infiltration vessels.. their so called "mother ships"

No, some wags at the BBC decided to mutilate a perfectly good boat by welding the car body onto it. They read an interview with the car's designer where he stated he was inspired by yacht styling. So what if his car was a boat after all? British humour.

At least this one is ugly on purpose. Most of those others were trying to make something pretty but failing.

My vote for 2017 goes to Toyota Corolla.

I always think one of two things:

- snow plow

- Star Trek planet eater

When I walk in front of one, I wonder if it will suck me in.

Too bad - I wanted one but just cannot get over that it might eat me.  I have to wait until they will not eat me.

I absolutely agree w.r.t. the PT Cruiser. It's worth noting, however, that the PT Cruiser was just one of the (unfortunately) more popular cars that was the result of the "retro" fetish that gripped American car manufacturers in the early 2000s. Many other terrible-looking cars also came out of this, such as:

I like how this thread has become a demonstration of why every car maker is playing it safe and churning out a variant of the same car. Even if you take the huge cost of car development into account, there is an uncanny tendency for every brand to carry pretty much the exact same line-up with similar cars with different badges. Cars have become so terribly boring that it makes you want to pull your hair out. It's nothing like the wild experiments car makers hazarded in years gone by. Most cars in this thread tried to do something differently, and get relentlessly punished for it. Something like the PT Cruiser actually was very popular, even though the duel economy wasn't very good due to the shape.

What do you prefer? An industry full of middle of the road cars, where every brand has almost the exact same car, designed by committee? Of some variety, with some people inevitable hating the model looks, and others loving it?

Chevy Spark was originally the Daewoo Matiz, which was a model here that had very poor sales, till it was rebranded as the Spark ( only the badges changed, the rest of the vehicle is still the mishmash of Daewoo and GM parts) and then it was quite popular.

Of course now that GM is packing it's bags and closing the plant at the end of the year the workers, sales and dealers are kind of upset, along with the owners of the vehicles, though for all of those based on the DaeWontGo platforms the spares are still going to all be non franchise, simply from the cost perspective of having the non OEM or Daewoo part being in Won, while the GM part was converted to dollars, had the US market price inflated then got loaded with shipping from USA to here as well. Standard response from the dealerships is " will be here in 6 weeks" for every single part. Korean and sparesboys off the shelf new or used, and if used might even be the right colour as well.

This is actually really nice. (from post #74)

Karmanchia looks in the front. The rear isn't that good, but the first 50% of the car is actually really nice. Most of the cars posted in these "ugly" usually suffers some not so good details in some part of the car (like the Citroen BX). Mostly proportions are off from some odd direction or it represent some now really old fashioned short lived fashion of some era. Would make a really nice rod with welder and angle grinder.

I think I prefer the BX over that car. Not in small part because the BX actually looks pretty good. That 80's vibe can be pretty nice.

There's no contradiction here. Wanting car companies to innovate and criticizing their failed attempts are not mutually exclusive things. The Edsel was a complete failure by all accounts, but virtually nobody who has criticized it over the past several decades thinks that car companies should just stop trying. There's always a risk of failure in any creative endeavor, whether it's designing a new car model, writing a novel, or recording an album. That risk is an inherent part of the desire to innovate, not something to be blamed on one's critics.

It has become a contradiction due to the huge costs involved in modern car development. There is a reason companies only present prototypes that are close to, or the same as later production models. Developing prototypes for the hell of it like in years past simply isn't economically feasible any more. Due to these enormous and ever larger costs associated with development, companies can't really afford to get it wrong any more. It really is a matter of not having your cake and eating it too.

Of course, companies are hurting themselves by developing the very same car their competitor or even sister brand develops. I never quite got why different brands, owned by the same company, produce pretty much the same car, for the same price and the same demographic. I guess it's harder to fire someone over playing it safe. Meanwhile, we get stuck with half a dozen carbon copies of the same car for every segment.

The Juke looks like someone at Nissan said to a 5 year old "See this pretty acceptable looking QashQai? Can you make a smaller version for us?"

The QashQai's pretty butt-ugly before you do anything else to it.

I always suspected that the QashQai got its improbable name when there was a marketing meeting that had someone with a stupidly posh English accent (think Jacob Rees-Mogg) and someone from Nissan Japan, and the English toff said  "This is going to be a cash cow." and the Japanese guy just wrote it down phonetically.  :) They do look a bit bovine...

I disagree. You can't polish a turd, no matter how much it cost. That is, an ugly car is still an ugly car. Whether the car company spent $1 on R&D or $1,000,000,000, it's still not the consumer's fault that it's ugly. Consumers want innovation, but that doesn't obligate them to refrain from criticism. Your original post sounds very much along the lines of (paraphrasing) "This is why we can't have nice things. You guys (consumers) want innovation then turn around and criticize." As if it needs to be somebody's fault, as opposed to just an unfortunate business reality. I don't blame the car manufacturers for playing it safe. Nor do I blame movie studios for cranking out endless reboots of old movies and TV shows. It sucks, but I can see how it makes a lot of financial success sense (stupid autocorrect). But blaming consumers for wanting to have their cake and eat it too is just as absurd.

Consumers want the best product for the lowest price, and manufacturers want the highest return for their R&D dollars. Neither of those positions is inherently any more (or less) valid than the other. That's just how it works. And as far as financial risk goes, there's plenty of risk on both sides, and it scales proportionally with the reward. The whole reason that any company ever takes risks trying to innovate is because there's a potentially much higher payoff. Likewise, a new car is a huge investment, and a consumer is taking on a lot more risk buying a fancy, expensive new model of car than they are just buying yet another 2 year old used Honda Civic.

I don't dispute your reasoning about why car companies don't innovate as much as they used to. I think that part is fairly obvious. What I disagree with is your seeming need to blame consumers for this state of affairs.

Consumers don't want innovation at all. That's a misconceptions that has cost a lot of business owners their money. Consumers want exactly what they had, only slightly different, under the guise of it being better. So that's what they get. Most people loathe actual change.

Mind you, I'm not saying that's the only mechanism in play, or even the dominant mechanism.

The SHERP has to be the ugliest.

It looks like a weird Lego car, but you'd have to admit, it would be a bit of fun to drive.

They were popular in New Zealand, as you could put two spare sheep in the boot.

Spare sheep? Spare sheep!?!

Oh dear, it looks as if everything I've heard about you Kiwis from the Aussies is true.  :)

I hope you aren't  referring to me, I'm one of those nasty Aussies.
Note the white stars instead of red ones on the flag.

Another giveaway---- I am a "Ham" & out of pure laziness use my call sign. VK6ZGO , on this forum.
Several others do the same----"VK" denotes Australia, the number, which State.

Kiwis call signs start with "ZL".

Sorry mate.

In my defence:
  • Because you were going on about keeping spare sheep handy I just made the, understandable, assumption that you were either Welsh or a Kiwi.
  • The flag's too small to tell which of the antipodeans you are, but enough to exclude the Welsh.
  • I discovered beer and girls* before I reached the terrible point of needing to learn all the world's call-signs just for the pure street cred it would have given me with the other nerds.
There we are, I think that's an adequate list of excuses.

By way of apology, have a virtual Vegemite sandwich on me and I promise in the future to include Aussies in my list of sheep obsessed deviants.

Yours,
        Uncle Bumblefuck.

*Some of them Aussies. By the way, Gentlemen let me pass along a pearl of wisdom garnered over the years: Do not go out drinking with Aussie or Kiwi women unless you you also take along some other men for the protection of your personal honour. Do not ask me for details, just accept the fruits of the hard won experience of an older man!
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

You can always just hover your mouse cursor over the flag. Just sayin'.

Edit: If you're viewing the full site (not the mobile version, which doesn't show flags anyway) on a mobile device with no mouse, you can long press on the flag image and the image text should show up. Might depend on OS and browser, but there's usually a way to do it.

I used the screenshot tool that comes with the MATE desktop environment. I'm running Linux Mint. However, if you're on Windows, I think IfranView can also do this, but you have to enable that feature in Options.

For Windows, press [CRTL] [SHIFT] [PRINTSCREEN] all at once.
Then paste in your viewer/editor of choice

That doesn't capture the mouse cursor. At least not on Windows 7. Just tried it to make sure.

In Windows 7 you can do that with the "Steps Recorder" -> type "psr" or "Steps Recorder" in the Start menu search bar.

In OS X you can configure the behavior of the screen grabbing app by launching "grab.app" via cmd+space search. Under preferences the type of displayed cursor can be selected.

Late to the party here. A legal app that should capture the cursor is Faststone Capture 5.3 (last free version).

Install as admin, YMMV - cheers!

This works.  But a little scary because MS wants me to use IE so I have to be careful.  I rebooted to make sure I did not lose my browser.   :-+

I use Faststone viewer and at first I thought they were the same.  After re-reading your message I realized they are different.  Since I have used Faststone for years, I will show my support for them by buying Faststone Capture 8.6 for $20.  Thanks Cliff

I will report on this after I try it out.
