I just stumbled upon Tim's YouTube channel this week. He does some excellent videos, including The Secret Life of Machines series. These have been re-uploaded to Youtube in HD from the original film.

His channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGrpLw1W3P1_BC4J-Hpytww

Don't let the episode names fool you. They are quite a bit more technical than the usual "How it's made" style series and are very practical. He's an engineer who builds all kinds of weird and wonderful machines. His video on different types of glue is also very good.

Here is one to get you started....

Tim Hunkin is amazing and his book 'The Rudiments of Wisdom' was one of my favourite books as a kid.

If you ever make it to London you really should check out his Holborn arcade

Fluke 112, this man has taste. Australia and New Zealand dodged a few bullets with mains wiring, plugs and sockets (not perfect, but close). I stepped on a UK plug with bare feet once, regretted it instantly.

I would love to! That place looks amazing. You get a sneak peek into some of his machines in some of the episodes. www.novelty-automation.com is the link for those playing along at home.

A brief tour:

Maybe so, but he only started uploading the remastered HD content in the last 6 months or so. Consider it a service to those who missed the first announcement. ;-)

Been a fan of Tim and Rex for years now, sadly Rex passed away a few years ago but Tim is still around and is a lovely bloke, friendly and approachable as well as a skilled hacker/engineer (in the truest sense)

His work crops up in all sorts of places, there's an installation in the Eden Project at St Austell, there's one or two in MOSI and I've stumbled across others which escape my memory now but his style is nearly always instantly recognisable.

The Holborn arcade was an accidental discovery while I was killing some time in London and it made me late.

Worth it.

I recently managed to visit the Under the Pier show in Southwold - similar to the Holborn one but obviously his machines are all one-offs so they we're different. I've been meaning to for ages and I wasn't disappointed.

It is hardly "HD", it may well be "remastered" but HD it ain't; he didn't use a film source for remastering, he used PAL tapes as the source: https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/secret-life-of-machines-documentary-series-remastered-released-on-youtube.1069860/

This is really amazing.
Sadly i missed educational shows like this in germany. I don't even know if many existed, if they did they aired late and i could not watch them.
One thing though this reminds me of is a very advanced "Die Sendung mit der Maus".  :-+
