If you are starting out, some of the suppliers have a 'kit' of mixed value metal 1% resistors available, check them on the web first to make sure they are not just trying to get rid of the stuff they couldn't sell.

1k, 4k7, and 10k seem to be the values I use a lot for pullups/pulldowns. Also useful are 100R and 470R for LED ballast resistors (1k or 4k7 also work well with blue LEDs, actually better if you're going to direct view them) and if you do a lot of low power stuff, 100k and above (up to 1M and 10M) would be essential.

If I had to pick I'd say get 1, 2.2, and 4.7 in all decades.
So:
10R, 22R, 47R
100R, 220R, 470R
1K, 2K2, 4K7
etc

If your anything like myself, your going to find a value you want but, just don't have; then having to make-up something near that value, best to have the whole range...

I recommend the standard values from 10R to 1M; pricing is reasonable for MF 1%.
