With respect, but to be totally honest, the footer links at the bottom of the page on this forum are USELESS - you can't see mid-blue FINE PRINT links on a light/dark grey patterned background - it not only makes your eyes hurt but it's a MESS.
There, I've said it - do you have any plans to make it more usable, Mr Dave? I don't want to sound ungrateful - that's not my stance - my stance is WHO ON EARTH gave this the green light? You are one for pointing out design flaws without holding back for a second, so in the same vein I would hope you take this feedback on board... and, hopefully, act upon it when you have a spare half an hour.
Thank you :)

That's just text generated by the forum to show the version etc. Normally as per the EULA it HAS to be there, but it does not really serve much a purpose for the end users. If you select you can still read it.

Yup, this.

So, it still looks a mess - surely it's better it can be legible than not?

Sure, if I can figure out how to edit the main template to change the footer colour I will.
Speaking of ugly, your forum name is too long and overlaps. Much worse than the footer.
-
I've never even scrolled far enough down to notice it. Surely there must be better things we can find to complain about.

Cheers mate. :)
Speaking of common sense (we are, after all), were my username "too long":
~1 Your forum should have a char limit and have prevented me from exceeding it, and ask me to choose a shorter username.
~2 The code for your forum should have been patched to cater for such a trivial condition; it is broken if it causes this error ONLY on my name length in a certain position in the layout; the internet is full of VERY long words, and MUCH longer char strings than this are present on this very forum - it would be a rather disastrous state of affairs if the internet couldn't handle long words. LOL!

Buddy you have guts to speak about a mess, when your long name is creating a mess.

It's an observation, not a complaint. Let's not turn a simple "Hey, this looks bad, and it looks bad if your product looks bad - have you considered that, or maybe considered fixing it? Cheers :)" into a defensive thing. It IS a mess, that's that, period, and no - the earth is still spinning, but as a design minded individual, I like things to look right, and I hope Dave would too - imagine if someone sent in a PCB with such a horrendous ugly design faux pas - he'd SOON have a mouthful or ten to say about it, and then some.
Come on, it's common sense to have a nice, functional design. Then again, they do make sweeping statements about engineers and their blindness to visually pleasing design, don't they. I am an engineer, but I would fix that because to not do so would bug me to no end - it's UGLY.
Anyway, your choice, Dave, bigger fish to fry and all that :)

What a classic example of turning something around and making it someone else's problem. With 88 pages of new user signups I suspect that this has not been a problem for many, if any, others.
I hope Dave continues to spend his time as he has. This forum thrives because of its content, not the perfection of its page design. I have enjoyed some of switchedmodepowersupply's comments on other threads, in spite of the ugly mess his screen name makes. I just assumed he wasn't concerned about appearances either.

EEVblog members: "Why address a bug when the cause of the bug should go away?"
Genius!

People, SMPS has a point, no need to go on attacking him. Yes, his name is "too long" as well, both can easily be fixed. He was just bringing up an issue.
There are bigger problems in the world.

No, don't deprive them of their simple pleasures; it's more productive and efficient to attack the person who finds the bug than to fix it, thank them and reward them. :palm:
"There are bigger problems in the world."
Yep, and apparently BIG names are a BIG problem for this forum, and yet they've not set a username limit on length. It's a BIG issue (and big on humility) to accept responsibility and take proactive steps to seek a bug fix, so they balk and panic, and attack me instead of rolling up their sleeves and attacking the PROBLEM.
Wow... :-DD
I should like to bring your attention, folks, to the point that URLs are long, LONG strings of uninterrupted ASCII... so how come THEY do not break this forum so easily?
-
People, SMPS has a point, no need to go on attacking him. Yes, his name is "too long" as well, both can easily be fixed. He was just bringing up an issue.
There are bigger problems in the world.
Bullshit.
SMPS is a member on here for five minutes, doesn't like the decor and then posts an purposely inflammatory thread title. What kind of response would you expect?
-
FWIW - the outcome you don't like is the result of two elements - the colour of the text and the background over which it is superimposed. The text will be SMF default and the background was Dave's choice.
So, it still looks a mess - surely it's better it can be legible than not?
Why?
What purpose would making it more legible serve?
In the scheme of things it is absolutely trivial - to the greatest degree possible. To me, it does NOT look like a mess at all. That bit of content is essentially irrelevant to the forum and it's functionality - and it's tucked down at the very bottom of the page - a place I never even look at. And if you really want to see it, you can. (Why, I don't know).
Calling it a user interface 'fail' is completely Over The Top.
So - do you want Dave to start trawling through the template to find out how to change the text colour? .... Or do you want him to change the background, so this piece of trivia is more visible?
I don't.
In fact, I don't want Dave to spend another nanosecond even contemplating this "issue". He can do far more interesting, productive and actually useful things with his time.

Length of membership does not negate validity of observation of bugs and design flaws. Only a proud, pompous ass would say that. I wasn't arrogant, I pointed it out as a possible design oversight.
-
Goodness, what an angry lot we all are. Calm down folks.

You're obviously very intelligent. So how can it be that you recently asked elsewhere for the definition of the word Trolling?

Because a dumbass would have just answered my question with any subterfuge.

What's your point? I'm sure he has used the internet before. I've contributed to forums and newsgroups 20 years before joining the EEVblog forum. Does that mean I'm "just a noob" who has no voice? I don't believe so.
Relax people. I'm sure SMPS means well. If he turns out to be a complete douche, then fine, but until then, cut him a bit of slack and give him the benefit of the doubt. This forum isn't a place so start flame wars, we're smarter than that. Go on IRC if you want to pick on people.

This poster is the epitome of trolling, and his denial of knowing what the word means makes it the only logical possibility.
-
As for the long name thing - the size is not really important, but it's structure is.
Here's an example I found.
There is no problem here as such. The template will wrap the name, if there are places where that is obvious, otherwise it will maintain a continuous string of text for as long as it can - a behaviour that is not uncommon.
Besides, the only posts that are affected are those made by the member with such a long, uninterrupted string of text.
-
Guys, this guy is an outright troll, look at his post history, even in another thread his username issue was brought up.
Dave: If you like I can adjust the footer text, just let me know what you want. Honestly I would rather see you spend your valuable time on content/videos, etc rather then dealing with this kind of crap.
-

Oh lighten up! I am yanking your chain, sheesh, didn't know you were so sensitive, sorry, I assumed you were all "hardened, seasoned engineers unafraid of speaking our minds"
Clearly not, for some - sensitive and precious. Calm down, I was "trolling" for a while and then quit it immediately, LIGHTEN UP :)
-
Now I too want a big name. I suddenly have big name envy.

You must be an "outright..." something - what can I choose to attribute to your personality, from minimal interaction with you? Choose a moniker - make it a nice one - I don't want to offend you or give you a title that will unfairly cast aspersions on you.
An outright nice guy! How about that? I am not a "troll" - I DID "troll" a couple of times and then couldn't be bothered. Hope that's cleared it up, sorry you misunderstand me, I am not a vindictive person :)
-

Fair enough. I'll take your word over anyone else's.
Now back to installing Windows NT 3.51 on my 486 :-) For some reason it doesn't like my Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 Pro video card.

Now I too want a big name. I suddenly have big name envy.
I'll break a chunk off mine and give you it - here, put your hand out (passes you "...ersupply") :p

So ... you get the juggernaut up to speed and when it gets out of control you stand back and say "Don't blame me, I'm not pushing any more"?
That's the best (and most lame) cop out I've come across in a long while.
If you want to 'yank on someone's chain' like you have for a bit of fun - don't do it here.
-

Just stick a space after "mode" and there won't be a problem.
Anyway, enough of this. I have more interesting things I can waste my time on.

Okay mate, I am sorry, I didn't mean for you to get the wrong idea and take offence. Yes, I have been a tad silly tonight - sorry.

As regards my username breaking layout, it appears EEVblog runs on SMF 2.0.13 (outdated) and in 2.1 they were well aware of it, ergo, fixed it... FIVE YEARS AGO! I am sure Dave has his reasons for sticking with his current version, but just as a heads up - it has been fixed and is NOT my fault, ok? Thanks.

Buddy you have guts to speak about a mess, when your long name is creating a mess.
Yeah it's long but to be fair to a new user signing up, how are they to know what is too long when they only have the field length of the signon form to go by. Why not enforce a maximum limit on username length at that point?

I agree entirely, it is certainly an oversight, but what reasonable people do is when they are informed of it, or notice it, either way, see what they can do to fix it, but what you said in the other forum was a joke.
Switchedmodepowersupply can you shorten your name, it screws my browser
LOL. Ermmmm, sorry, but that would be ridiculous. Maybe Mr EEVblog will fix the forum to make it so that something so trivial doesn't cause text overflow/wraparound issues (I've seen it too, it's this crappy forum code, not blaming Dave, it's not his design.)
I like my username - won't change it - that won't fix the forum.
True that it wont fix the forum, but it would show that you are willing to work around the issue instead of using it to annoy people. Sure, report it, great! as a developer we are always looking for people to report bugs/feature requests, etc... But don't be so stubborn.

I've probably got about 8-10 old computers I'd like to have working in my computer room (C64, Atari, old Macintosh's etc...). Among them is just a 486 I had since I was a kid.
I figured Windows 3.11 is a bit boring, so I decided to install NT 3.51 on it since I've never used it (let alone installed it). It's proving to be a bit of a challenge which keeps me interested.
My other half thinks I just collect junk. We have an unwritten rule, he doesn't question me about my vintage computer collection, I don't question him about staying up to all hours playing games. It's a good system. :-)

Note this is a THEME patch, its patching the CSS, not the forum itself. This is a valid workaround, but still not a complete fix.
As to the version running, when you have a forum that has this many people on it, with this many topics & threads, upgrading the forum is a very risky thing as a breakage could cause an outage, or even worse, break part of the website that nobody notices for a few days, which by then ton of data is corrupted/missing or incomplete.

I realise, I've been a Linux sysadmin since 2004, you can, however, make a VM and test it there, and if it works, roll it out. I am not a FORUM expert, but I'm a pretty seasoned software person. My way would be to install a mirror of the working/used SMF on a virtual server, apply the CSS patch and see how it rolls. What's worse - allowing a bug you KNOW about to continue unfixed, where there IS a fix available, or have a few hours of downtime for long term benefit?
Anyway, NOT a forum sysadmin and with no desire to be, I'll leave this to people with more experience in forum maintenance, specifically.
Thanks.

Awesome, I love the older gear, I had a 486DX something years ago with a Tseng Labs ET6000 when I still in primary school. I won the ET6000 from a computer magazine competition (I think it was APC), and still today I miss that card. I'd love to get my old retro PC back. I think my favorite PC was a 386 I had though and playing the old Sierra adventure games on it with the then brand new Sound Blaster (not the Pro, just the normal one, but I had the FM modules on it).
I also had an Amiga 1000 at one point and later was given an Amiga 2000, but sadly I did not value these machines enough when I was younger and sold them for well below what they were worth.
So now I am running the Sierra titles in ScummVM (which btw is excellent), using Munt as a MT-32 emulator, which is a ton of fun, and memories.

Yeah, this is all possible and is done in commercial environments, but note that I am giving of my free time to help out here, Dave is also giving of his free time to help out and run all this... You tell me how I am to justify the time and resources to do a test roll out as you describe on a forum like this over paid work.
Also a VM is not required for this, it is much simpler, just duplicate the database, duplicate the forum and point it to the new database, upgrade the duplicated form and test. If all is successful, then apply the same process to the production site, but only after making a backup and informing the entire community there will be a short outage during the upgrade. Even after all of this, things can and do still go wrong, its not like we have a team of 100 testers to work through every feature of the website to find the one obscure feature that broke.

Attached is an action shot as of 5 minutes ago on my messy "bench".
I loved the old Sierra games! Have many fond memories. Not sure if it was Sierra but I used to play "Island of Dr. Brain" as a kid. Sim City 2000 remains my favourite game to this day. What else? Need for Speed, Carmageddon, Jazz Jackrabbit, Epic Pinball, Sim Farm... all good stuff.

Well hey, I can't tell you what to do :) - the bug which my username triggers, doesn't bother me in the slightest, and I am not the one in charge of patching forum code, and I happen to like my username (that's why I chose it.)
Leave it with you :) thanks.

It's a test, designed to reveal users with napoleon complex or similar propensities

I doubt that's an issue when you're 6'5" and 22 stone :D

Attached is an action shot as of 5 minutes ago on my messy "bench".
I loved the old Sierra games! Have many fond memories. Not sure if it was Sierra but I used to play "Island of Dr. Brain" as a kid. Sim City 2000 remains my favourite game to this day. What else? Need for Speed, Carmageddon, Jazz Jackrabbit, Epic Pinball, Sim Farm... all good stuff.
I am about embark on a re-creation of two (original) doom deathmatch machines. Trouble is, the source code is available to run on modern Linux machines but doing the null modem thing between two of them is not so clear. So still agonising which path to take. Do I try and revive old hardware or do I use the modern stuff and hit the inevitable roadblock.

You tell me how I am to justify the time and resources to do a test roll out as you describe on a forum like this over paid work.
Everyone who has been around here long enough knows this and is thankful to you for it. A new user won't know that. In fact the fewer who know it the better. That means things are going smoothly.
Thanks mate, and yeah, we have not had any major hiccups for quite some time now and I entirely agree. It is like what I tell my clients, "if you have to report an outage to me, I am not doing what you pay me to do".

There's more too the OP has no idea about. ::)
Dave changed the background a while back and that made the SMF label, link and version more hidden which is the subject matter of this thread.
Suggestions for forum changes come forward from time to time and Dave has resisted updating to some SMF versions for one reason or another but has added patches/fixes no doubt after some research and discussions with gnif.
That this dude has the outright cheek to register with such a long name and after 2 weeks have a dig at the forum and stir shit I find more offensive than his login.
Keep going like this and you won't find many friends here.

A bit short for your weight are you?

You are free to find anything you wish "offensive" if you're daft enough to spend energy on it - it's your time you're wasting. Do you think I sit around letting random internet people "offend" me, wasting my time and draining my energy? Go ahead, take all the "offence" you like, it's your time and stress level - make a scene and tie yourself up in knots over it if you want to be all silly about it and blow it out of proportion.
Or... you could just say "Ah well, never mind, that's life" and walk away like a man would do. :)
PS: I don't come here to "make friends" - I come here because I love electronics, I don't need any internet "friends" (nor do I come to make "enemies", but if you CHOOSE to take offence? Oh well, I think I'll just about get over that...), I live a very happy and wholly fulfilled life, sorry (for you) if that bothers you but that's how it is.
Enjoy your week, don't let me get to you - forget about me if I am so terrible, cheerio!

This thread... wow. I do not desire to "make friends" online, maybe that wasn't clear? I am here to discuss electronics - if you have a burning passion for people to "make friends" then maybe you should apply for a job as a kindergarten teacher and allow me to live my life without "advice" from arrogant know it alls online, strangers at that, and the day I take "advice" from a complete stranger who demonstrates contempt and ego is the day I've given u on life, and that day won't ever come. :)
You're not gonna make any progress with this, you better trust me on that score and save yourself a LOT of wasted effort, I am not here to seek emotional support or "life coaching", so quit whilst you're ahead, you must have better things to do, I don't want to waste your time, ok? :) thanks.

OK, so I have NT 3.51 running now with proper video drivers. For some reason it was crashing with the previous card. But it works flawlessly with a Cirrus Logic 5430 card.
:-D

So, it still looks a mess - surely it's better it can be legible than not?
Sure, if I can figure out how to edit the main template to change the footer colour I will.
Speaking of ugly, your forum name is too long and overlaps. Much worse than the footer.
LOL!
Or
~3 You could have noticed that it was a problem (as others have in the past) and requested to change your display name.
Anyway, I've fixed it for you, you're welcome.

Dave: If you like I can adjust the footer text, just let me know what you want. Honestly I would rather see you spend your valuable time on content/videos, etc rather then dealing with this kind of crap.
If you think you know were the code is and it's easy and zero risk, sure, thanks. Otherwise there is only one person who seems to care...

This is stock forum colour schemes, like it, shut up about it or leave.

Thanks.

A pretty damn good reason, yeah:

They just released 2.0.13 a few weeks and I upgraded to that.

I have never skipped an SMF update. I just upgraded the other week to 2.0.13 when they released it.
