Transformer testing
« on: October 03, 2021, 12:03:01 pm »
Hi
I am rewiring a 240v 50Hz Transformers (Laminated Core) primary winding, question will it do any harm if I power it up without the laminates in place .

cheers

Without the core in place, the inductance of the primary winding will be very low and if you apply full mains voltage the current will go off the planet and burn out the winding very quickly. Use another transformer and apply say 10VAC to the winding for a short time and measure the current with and without the core.
