FWIW, I've been trying this, and have been unable to get a piece of balsa to bleach using the peroxide and sun I have available :-(   Maybe I need to wait till summer!

You put sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide yeah?

The lignin-modified wood was prepared by brushing 25 ml H2O2 and 5 ml NaOH solution and illuminating with UV light for 1 h.

I didn't see the NaOH the first time.

Also, I want to try a range of "consumer" peroxides:3% "medicinal."6-10% "hair bleach."~27% "pool sanitizer"

Pretty nicely done, if a bit "chatty."  (includes lots of failure!  Only "marginal" success in the end.)
The NaOH did turn out to be significant.
