121GW Multimeter: Odd LCD Behaviour
« on: January 10, 2018, 02:03:55 am »
I noticed something strange, when I swiped my hand over the LCD, random segments would light up momentarily, even though the unit was switched off. It persisted like this for several hours. Static build-up making it through the clear plastic casing onto the LCD segments?

Apparently, I think I've seen this on some devices.

I assume it does not happen if switched on.

Just tried with mine, which still has the screen protector on, and no segments showed. As for yours do these 'illuminated' segments disappear immediately you turn the meter on ?.
Anyway it would be static build up in the plastic screen. I have seen this behaviour as well with bare LCD screens.
The odd multimeter or 2 or 3 or 4...or........can't remember !.

I noticed this peeling off the screen protector. Didn't persist long, but I could do it over and over again.

So that we don't end up with a multitude of similar threads you might want to post this issue in the dedicated 121GW thread located in the Test Equipment section.

I see this all the time, very normal, some kind if static charge. Always goes away.
I install devices with lcd and plastic protectors alot.

Thanks guys, yes, it started immediately after peeling off the plastic protector. The effect only lasted for a few hours until it appears the charge dissipated. I wouldn't exactly call it an "issue", just a temporary quirk. The first time I thought I just imagined it.

You're gonna have to tell me how good it is so I can get jealous enough to maybe buy one when they go public.

Sadly I have occasional use for a multimeter, but I expect that to change in the coming years, so perhaps a bit of an investment to help a creator I love so much would be worth it for me.

I also am like Dave and can't resist touching buttons and twiddling knobs, and multimeters tend to have the best knobs and buttons available.

Didn't Dave demonstrate this effect in his recent LCD design video?

Drop its temperature to -40.  Then what does it display?
