That was a good read..
TWTs Gyrotrons and the like are far from dead.
After all the LHC is the world's largest vacuum tube.

After all the LHC is the world's largest vacuum tube.

Surely the Stanford Linear Accelerator is the worlds largest vacuum tube. The LHC is more of a toroid than a tube...

It is also a vacuum tube that happens to be toroidal shaped.

I will bet they were all made by hand, using a team of professional glass formers.
