From the pics the LCD looks terrible.  Dark blue backlight and black text.
Although, maybe that makes it good in bright outdoors?

Interesting that they advertise "AVR ISP Interface" as a feature, must be quite hackable :)

The LCD look diferent in each photo so it is hard to judge.
The "AVR ISP" is there for people to use third party firmware. There was an add-on board to allow this to happen on the 9x.
It seems they have taken the mods people were doing to the 9x and rolled them into the 9xr.
They also say the firmware is open source. "Hackable" is an understatement.....:)

It appears to simply be the Turnigy/FlySky 9X with a different case and a few interface modifications.

I'd say that from an electronics design it's exactly the same (aside from an internal 2.4GHz antenna and an RF jack on the module plus two types of buddy-box interface).

What has pee'd a bunch of folk off is that they're including the ER9X firmware (an independent open-sourced bit of software), apparently without crediting the writers of that code.   We've seen this argument before -- if it's OSS then how can it be "stolen" -- but it's always nice to give credit where credit's due.

They missed the opportunity to make the single biggest improvement possible to that radio -- by adding sliders (lever-operated pots) to the sides of the radio.  These sliders allow fliers to operate things such as flaps, airbrakes or retracts without taking their fingers/thumbs off the main sticks.  Most modern radios have them today -- their omission in the 9XR is a massive oversight (IMHO).

But for the money -- it's still great value (as the 9X was before it).

The biggest problem they'll have is keeping them in stock.

I have read that some people are asking if it is using ER9X firmware. I have not read any confirmation of it tho.
There website implies they have developed the firmware in house. Time will tell i guess.
The LCD backlight and usb port is a big step forward from the 9x.

Waiting for Hobbyking to start selling C-Tick approved modules for this radio in there Australian warehouse.

If you look at the screen-shots on the HK webpage, you'll see that it's almost certainly the ER9X firmware.
