UK wages for EE

(1/1)

vixo:
I'm currently applying for EE jobs in Germany after some years managing my own one man company. I'm an EE graduate, PhD holder, good at analogue design and debugging, ok at digital and PCB design - that's my one sentence resume! I'm a mid-level employee, I would say. I'm looking for jobs primarily at more sciency engineering companies as it fits in with my background in research.

The kind of jobs I'm applying for in Germany are paying about 60-70K Euro. However as a UK national I am keeping an eye on jobs in the UK and as far as I can make out comparable jobs in the UK seem to be paying significantly less (I realise it's a little difficult to make a direct comparison with wages) - around 40-45K GBP.

Could anyone give me an idea of UK wages for someone in my position? Am I correct that Germany just pays much better?

Benta:
You'll have to compare net earnings, not gross.
I've no idea of how it works in the UK, but your German target of 60...100k Euro is ballpark for a MSc/EE. Expect to get around 50% of that as net income. That's after tax and health insurance (the two largest deductions) plus diverse.
But can you get a "green card"? Brexit kinda messed things up.
I don't think UK PhDs are accepted in Germany, the equivalent here would be a doctorate.

coppice:
What was your PhD topic? Is that something that would enhance or detract from your job prospects?

AndyBeez:
Apples versus Oranges. Do you have dual nationality?
Post Brexit, understand your tax and benefits position:

If it's the English speaking world you crave, why not the US? PHDs fly a lot further/higher stateside.

I'm comparing net earnings and using Numbeo - it gives the best answers as to the cost of living in different places. I've been living in Germany for years now and have the right to remain and work.

It was in sensor technology. It seems beneficial to the more sciency engineering roles, but not at all for commercial products design, for example.

I have right to work here (Germany) yes. I'd not considered the US, I've been living in Germany for some years already but at this point I'm considering moving to be nearer family in the UK. In my experience US is a great place to visit but I'm not sure I'd want to live there... maybe I'm missing out
