Request to block Russians temporarily from the forum
« on: February 27, 2022, 06:40:36 pm »
Earlier this week Russia started a war in Europe by attacking Ukraine. The battlefield is in Ukraine and on EU level we are in the middle of economical war against Russia. Since Wednesday many countries and organizations activated sanctions against Russia. The list is growing every day. Almost every hour.
I deeply apologize for each and every Russian member in this forum because I can't believe you have done nothing with this. But unfortunately, sanctions are the only way we can influent at the moment. From inside. The next step is, and I hope that will never happen, direct war between Europe and Russia. Russians, please stop the war before it. Please find the wisdom!

As a citizen living very close to Russia, I feel my duty to request this. Even when I can see an answer that a) EEVblog is not a political instrument and b) we need to be united. But, like I wrote, it is my duty to request this because the more pressure we can put against Russia, we can still hope peaceful ending.

For Ukrainians, I pray for you. Stay strong. Do what Finland did twice in WW2.

I am requesting to block Russians and Belarussians temporarily from the forum. After a friendly hand is offered from these countries I would welcome you all back. But now, unfortunately, we only see weapons and statements of nuclear war from east.

A

I don't see what purpose that would serve, anymore than banning RT from the EU would.  The second someone tries to shut someone else up, I become interested in what they are trying to say.  For example, RT America is still going here with their laughable propaganda, and as much as they might represent something I oppose, I wouldn't advocate taking them down.  It is valuable to know even your avowed enemy's point of view so as to understand them better.  Of course if your plan of action depends on manipulating the weak-minded, then censorship and information control are more effective tools.
A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

Why would you punish actual people? Do you think anyone in Russia supports the war? Do you think people in Russia have any say over the people in charge?

People living in places that resemble democracies think that you can simply vote the dictators out. This is not how it works.

the beef is with Putin and his ilk, not the Russian people. I'm sure most of them doesn't want a war either but quite few of them is probably not going to say that to avoid getting arrested and fall out of a window ...

This forum "A Free & Open Forum For Electronics Enthusiasts & Professionals" is not the place for politics.
I have nothing against the forum members from Russia, it's their government and early childhood brainwashing that is a problem.
I do notice a lot of pro-Russia shills on Internet forums and social media, but lately nobody is buying their song. I guess they are paid well.

Actually, the president of the EU Commission has announced this afternoon that they are banning RT.

I don't like Putin, but this absolute bullshit, nothing happenned until Russia started Nord Stream 2 project.
The petrol crysis of few years ago already started some tension, as russians could sell it much cheaper

USA is all freedom and peace until you mess with uncle Sam's oil/gas, they wanted this so badly to stop it!
Nothing worked, so they took the OTAN way (Tickling the dragon's tail).
So now it's a terrible war because few people died.
But 20 years of Wikileak revealing all type of USA terror, torture and civilians being killed made no **** difference.

So when are we blocking all USA citizens too?  :-DD

BTW, I recall seeing at least one Russian member who already voiced his opposition to this intervention on the forum, so you, sir, are quite full of it TBQH. And nope, Putin is not a member here and neither would you cripple his industry or anything.

Actually, the president of the EU Commission has announced this afternoon that they are banning RT.
And one member state banned voicing support for Putin. Virtue signaling levels are off the charts, only volunteers to face Russian tanks are missing.

The LAST thing we want to do is cut off the Russian people from the world. The sanctions are already going to be painful enough for them.

Many Russians are against this war. I have friends in Russia against this war.

Don't be stupid, this isn't everyday people of Russian origin doing this, it's a crazy quasi-dictator.

If we were to ban people because of what the state that they are subjects of got up to, then we'd have to ban a lot more people than just Russians and Belarussians; there'd be the Americans, because of their repeated drone strikes on innocent civilians in various countries around the world as part of their undeclared ongoing war to assassinate their 'enemies', the British, Australians, Canadians, and Kiwis, for the support their intelligence agencies give America in that ongoing, eternal war on terror that those drone strikes are part of. And the list would go on until the only people we didn't ban were the Bhutanese.

This singling out of individuals because of their nationality (which they can't help) is exactly the kind of tribalism that feeds wars, not stops them.

It's only one step further before we start calling them by loaded de-humanising names like 'gook' because everybody knows that people from that country are all bad, barely human even, and we're doing the world a favour by exterminating them. (The word 'exterminating' was used by TASS in an official press release today to describe what they (Russia) were doing to their 'enemy' in Ukraine.)
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

well if it makes you feel better the Russians that are down with invasion probably don't speak or write English very well (they have a main line of Russian media in their own language that is patriotic and written in acceptable rhetoric) and I would imagine the arrested amount of protesters in Russia is probably 10,000+ (always assume the numbers reported are under stated), and that there is probably 10-20 times as many people who fled from the protest scenes on sight of cops (think about it, how many percent of protesters do cops usually arrest? do cops even like holding people in jail cells? their goal was to get the street clear.. so they defiantly encouraged running to make their jobs easier) and 100x more that are generally scared of doing anything in public as soon as there is trouble but are generally anti violence (its not hard to feel worried about your countrymen when they are fighting).

The big majority of people on the forum that like doing things with electronics for lighting reasons (there is alot) are likely on the 'free' side of the political spectrum also (it's not like this forum is focused on hard core industrial activity, more like science and art, industrial equipment is always shoddy in the areas that are good for instagram). Scientists and artistically inclined people are not usually for war.

Additionally information on this forum is less useful for people that are well financed and have development locked down in standards (i.e. military), we bring processes and designs down to feasibility by individuals and relatively poorly funded organizations, that often involves compromising features deemed essential for military/industrial equipment. If you try doing a by the books design that actually accounts for standards you don't really need, you can easily see its not very popular here, due to extra effort and (great) cost increase. (I would imagine a great deal of us get paid to deal with these 'details' professionally but our interest in those things completely ends after 9-5/mon-fri).
