Unique ideas for phone storage issues?
« on: August 19, 2013, 05:17:10 am »
I got a new phone the other day, the Droid DNA (known as the HTC Butterfly outside the States) and it's the first Android phone I've owned that did not have expandable storage. I also was no longer allowed to keep my unlimited data plan with this upgrade.

My old phone had 2GB onboard storage and a 16GB MicroSD card and this phone has 16GB total with only 11GB accessible as media storage.

I now have a total of 2GB data available per month. What I'd like to find is some kind of seemless solution that hopefully won't eat up my data plan.

Of course a perfect solution would be something that would determine what media on my phone wasn't accessed frequently and move it to "the cloud" and move it back if I start using it. Hopefully the moving would take place when I'm home and on Wifi.

Anyway, what ideas do you guys have? I have a Pogoplug somewhere but it may be in storage which is almost an hours drive away. There's google drive I guess, but not that seemless. I could move my music to google music but I might eat up my data streaming it.  Most of my storage ends up being videos I've recorded and pictures. I really don't want to constantly upload everything to youtube. Silent and seemless would be nice.

I don't know about intelligently updated cloud storage, but for syncing pictures and videos, I use SugarSync. There's a million and one apps that do this, but I like this one. You get something like 5GB free storage, and you can set it to only sync when you've got WiFi connected.

Of course, you could go the adventurous route and replace the internal flash with a 64GB module  :-/O

For right now I set up Google Plus to synchronize all my photos. I never use Google Plus but I figure it's a start.
I'm also uploading all my music to Google Music. I just need to ween myself off of storing everything on the phone permanently.

Lima might be a good solution, but you wouldn't get one until next spring at least. Similar to PogoPlug, but supposed to be more transparent. Supposed to cache locally and support replication to other nodes - so for example you could have one at home and one at work, and they would stay in sync. While at home it would stream from the home unit over wifi, and while at work it would be smart enough to stream from that one instead, and only use your data plan when away from those two areas. Also, the redundancy is nice. Re-ripping an entire CD library due to one failed HDD sucks.

I'm almost certain that phone supports USB OTG, get a 64gb USB stick and an OTG cable.

I use a galaxy nexus phone and nexus 7 tab.

Pictures taken on the phone are uploaded to google drive so are available on both devices

Music, i uploaded everything i have to google play music so is all available from the cloud on both, the music app will allow you to specifically download offline also everything you just play will be cached anyway, My tab now has many gb of my music cached ready to play anytime.

I've got my phone set to sync with G+/Picasa whenever on wifi and charging.  I think that's going to be my best solution so far.  The HTC gallery app integrates pretty well into Picasa, Flikr, and Facebook so you can browse pictures online fairly easy.
