Title: Unread Posts disappearing
Post by: AlfBaz on March 14, 2013, 01:06:39 pm
As I'm sure a lot of forum users do, I usually just click "Show unread posts since last visit".

Some times I don't get a chance to go through and read the subject lines for all the messages if there's 4 or more pages of unread posts and when I revisit there is only 1 or 2 pages of unread posts when I only read a handful of posts.

At first I thought it only happened if I visited the site on my tablet or phone with tapatalk but over this last week I have only visited via my PC.

Does this happen to anybody else?

If there's no easy fix can we at least get a shortcut search like the 2 already there that says "todays posts"?

Yes, its been happening to me too over the last few days only. Its quite annoying. I just assumed there was some server reset or or something and everything would be back to normal soon. I know Dave and friends have been playing with the server since the forum moved servers. Maybe that has something to do with it

Happening here too but I have only noticed it when browsing the forum with tapatalk.

For me it has been happening well before the server change over

Yes, something's changed about the behaviour recently -- it used to do exactly the same thing, except it now does it a lot faster I think.

There's a button below the unread posts list marked 'All Unread Topics', which will bring up the complete list instead of the '... since last visit' list; what seems to be happening is that it decides your visit is a new visit a lot quicker than it used to, so all the posts you didn't read from the 'last' visit disappear from the 'since last visit' list.

I've also noticed a little weirdness with posts sometimes not disappearing from the list for a few minutes after reading; some sort of caching?

I got the impression that it used to reset about once per day. Since Dave's server upgrade it seems rather erratic.

Ahh that done the trick. Just clicked it, 97 pages of unread posts  :)

For me it was about once per week. The list cleared entirely yesterday.

The other new feature: sometimes you can open an unread post but it will still appear in the unread list on the next refresh even though no additional posts have been added.

I haven't been missing posts. What has been happeneing to me is I can mark "all read" in a section but the new posts color stays when I navigate back to home using the home button. Sometimes I need to click on "all read" 2 or 3 times before it clears.

Same thing for me, if I read all unread in news then it still shows unread messages when I click the home button.

It's not a problem, just a little annoying.

This is related to the server move, things should stabilise somewhat now since the move was completed. Any strange behaviour that still exists is now due to how SMF decides to handle read/unread posts is outside of the scope of the changes we have been making. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
