Usenet newsgroups for EE's
« on: March 17, 2014, 04:43:10 am »
Does anyone know of some active Usenet newsgroups (/Google groups) which are relatively spam free?
I have, literally, seen only comp.dsp and comp.arch.fpga survive, over the last decade or so, and my searching skills are borderline garbage.

My interests are mostly in physical-layer signal processing and implementation, rf measurements, and the occasional microcontroller based designs.

Would really appreciate if someone could point out some other active (and by active I mean having some real, relevant, and a large number posts and replies) groups.
Or has everyone moved on to forums like EEVblog and EDAboard ?

sci.electronics.design, more on the analog/general side of things.  Though I'd say this place gets more posts per day, and is a whole hell of a lot more on topic (it's sad when two of the most prominent posters constantly goad each other..).

Other forums I'm aware of include DutchForce (pretty slow these days, but new topics always welcome), and of course the respective subreddit and StackExchange.

Also comp.arch.embedded.  All three (including the two that was mentioned in the original post) have their own "-related" web sites that let you post, which is probably not a coincidence.  comp.lang.vhdl seems to get some traffic too.

sci.electronics.design, more on the analog/general side of things.  Though I'd say this place gets more posts per day, and is a whole hell of a lot more on topic (it's sad when two of the most prominent posters constantly goad each other..).

I tried reading sci.electronics.basics a while back, but it seemed to be populated mostly by bitter old men calling each other "fag" at every opportunity.  Sometimes moderation of a forum really makes the difference..

An interesting recent development is that there seems to be a bunch of dissatisfied former Slashdot users that have started posting in comp.misc.  Which isn't really relevant per se, but maybe some people will spill over and rediscover what newsgroups are about.

IMHO it is safe to say usenet is dead. You'll have to find an online forum.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

sleemanj, that is not true.

I invite you to read the 4-5 newsgroups that have been mentioned specifically, and then compare with s.e.b.  Some groups are actually active and useful, others not.
