PlainName:
tl;dr: I am the user previously known as dunkemhigh

I can't remember why I first wanted to create an account on EEVBlog - whether I wanted to comment to a post, or just be able to skip to previously unread posts, but what I do remember is being faced with the prompt for a username. I wanted something that was kind of related to my other IDs and unique enough not to be encumbered with numbers after it. I had in mind something when I rolled up at the registration stuff but it proved to be unsuitable (can't remember what it was or why it was rejected now, though). Faced with a blank edit field, evaporating time and a severe lack of creativity I went with dunkemhigh.

To be honest, I almost immediately regretted that choice. Active 'doing' names strike me as a bit iffy (and not just me, as we shall see), but also the suggestion that I might be dunking someone/thing high is not something I would normally promote. But it was done and, over the years, no-one seemed to notice or mind.

Fast forward nearly a decade and it turns out someone has noticed, and has minded. Indeed, that name has been used as supporting evidence that I am probably trolling. Oh well, I wasn't that keen on it in the first place, so I asked for my username to be changed to something quite meaningless and without any connotations. PlainName is it.

You would think that perhaps that would  be it. Unfortunately, it then occurred to me that the kind of person that would see a statement of intent in my previous, nonsensical name would just assume that by changing my name I am trying to hide my previous posts. Let's be straight - there are some things that would have been better unposted, and some I might even regret having written, but they are there and I wrote them (along with the ones that are just fine). If I really wanted to hide all that I would just start with a new account and no-one (other than the mods) would know who I am or was. But, as you can see, I haven't - this is purely a name change to head off conspiracy theorists.

Nevertheless, I figured it would be simpler all around if I made this post somewhere quite public, making it obvious that I am the user previous known as dunkemhigh. Of course, I couldn't do that until my name was changed, so I waited for that email which would say "Oh, your account details have changed, here's the new login and password" as per the SMF manual. Little did I know that it would just happen, and not just 'just happen' but happen in the middle of a posting session. Slick work mods (really, it was super-simple and I am grateful).

But... yes, you guessed: before I even knew my name had been changed, there was a post saying "For the avoidance of doubt, PlainName == dunkemhigh" and "I wonder why he wanted to change his name". Which shows that the perceived need for this note was actually necessary after all.

So, hopefully that will explain things and head off further accusations of nefarious intent (planned 9.5 years ago!) and/or attempts to hide embarrassing wibble or whatever.

A final word for the search engines: PlainName used to be dunkemhigh

I wouldn’t spend a solitary second worrying about trolls or accusations from random strangers. I get attacked on here and I’m laughing at them; they know less than naff all, how could they possibly know more?

I always liked your username. Please revert it back if possible :)

Nice to know you’re here and have a conscience and morals. Many could learn from you :) (so, SO many online)

Take care.

Thanks!

It's available for hire, for a very reasonable fee.

I wouldn’t normally ask about a person’s name, but since you’ve brought it up, what do the negative connotations of “dunk ‘em high” actually refer to?

As a North American, my mind immediately goes to “dunking” a basketball, into a high hoop, which I don’t find terribly negative or controversial.

I fear that I (and probably others) aren’t worldly enough to get the original reference, lol.

pcprogrammer:
Add and change a couple of letters for fun :-DD
