Hydrogen is not great for internal combustion engines because the flame front is much faster. Therefore the combustion speed and, as a result, the peak cylinder pressure are both higher.
More pressure means more stress in the piston and con-rod, meaning that, for the same output power, a hydrogen powered ICE would need to have heavier internals, compared to a gasoline or diesel counterpart.
AFAIK hydrogen fuel cells are a better way of using hydrogen than an ICE.
