Title: Video resolution on cameras
Post by: sony mavica on October 06, 2016, 01:44:57 am
So my phone I bought new for 35nzd free shipping has a 5mp camera and can record in 720p30fps takes very HQ video and photos look great but I have another app on my phone called lg camcorder that let's me rec in 1080p and it records fine but I wanted to know is it just upscaled from 720p seeing that 5mp photos have a higher resolution then 1920x1080 I would think its not but I'm not sure how cameras work when taking video

Just because it takes pictures at 5mp doesn't necessarily mean it supports 1080p video as the sensor might not be able to be read out fast enough (also the ISP in the processor might not be able to receive and process pixels fast enough).

However a number of common 5mp image sensors do support 1080p30. Easiest option though would be to look up your phone model on gsmarena which will probably list the capabilities of the camera.
