On this day seventy seven years ago

Before me but still relevant in my generation (born mid 60s). The thing is that some people would think that back then people were more gullible, the thing is that now we are not smarter and fall for all kinds of things. Probably not this obvious but yeah, we are still pretty gullible :)

Edit: just look at how many people believe what fox news says

It's a tradition in the German_EE lab that every 31st October I turn the lights down low in the workshop and listen to the Orson Wells broadcast of War of the Worlds.  Many years ago it was an evening for two and the young lady concerned had never heard of the infamous broadcast until I played it for her. That evening the great Mr Wells added a new fan to his list.

Time well spent.

Actually, if you want to be picky, it's 118 years...ish!  :)

It had a similarly effect on Victorian readers.

They still are; nothing has changed.

The book by HG Wells is still one of my favourites. I've bought the book about 25 years ago but the first time I heard (yes, 'heard') about this book was late '70s or early '80s when I heard the musical by Jeff Wayne. I was somewhere between 5 and 8 years old and it was my 'first contact' with SciFi.  ;)

Besides this story, The Time Machine and The Invisible Man are two of my other favourites of HG Wells.

Same here. I have that album... it is hilarious now that I listen to it. Well done, but the music was very disco.

I still have the first release cassette tapes, my parents bought them when it was released and I've played it many times as a kid. Some sounds where 'spooky' for a kid but I loved it. Somewhere in the middle of the '80s a national radio station aired a Dutch spoken version of Jeff Wayne's musical.

About ten years ago I've bought the Limited Edition box set which included 4 CD's, one DVD and 2 SACD's. Just because of this, I've bought a SACD player right after the box arrived.

An electronics link to the Jeff Wayne album, to create a lot of the music they built a custom synthesizer called 'Thunderchild'.

I still have my original mp3 album stolen of the net some many years back.

If you like The War of the Worlds then you might want to seek out 'The War in the Air' a story of more human based aerial combat. An astonishing view of the future considering that he wrote it in 1907!
