It seams that Wattway is almost here

After nearly five years of research, the French engineering firm Colas now ready to perform 100 test roads worldwide with their Wattway solar panels.

By combining several types of plastic, and a rough surface of broken glass, it has been possible to encapsulate Colas a conventional solar panel in a clear housing that can withstand both the climate and the weight differences from the trucks.

The new solcellevej is only 7 millimeters high and, according to Colas laid directly onto existing surfaces such as asphalt, concrete and tile. In addition to making the panels slip, the broken glass surface also make panels resistant to wear.

The first stretch of road on 2,800 square meters is under construction in the French village of Tourouvre in Normandy. The line is expected to generate 280 kilowatts at an optimal day, which according to Colas is enough to power a town of 5,000 inhabitants with street lighting an entire year.

Three lines in Denmark
To test the new solbelægning in all weather conditions plan Colas additional 100 test roads worldwide.

"We have to test under all kinds of traffic and climate. However, we are concerned that the panels can cope with a snowplow, says Colas' technical director, Philippe Harelle.

Colas Danish section rates in this context to be able to behave 2:00 to 3:00 solar cell lines in Denmark as early as next year.

"We are working to get two to three sample stretches out in 2017, if we can get some municipalities," says product engineering manager at Colas Denmark Lars Ladehoff.

The price of Wattway panels are not at the cheap end. So far, costing the panels between 15,000 and 19,000 kr. Per. square meters. This price include also the installation of the panels.
