Darn critters... I've had to shell out a four figure sum to repair all the damage they've done in the engine compartment of our cars over the last years... Somehow ignition cables, cables in general and coolant hoses seem to be very tasty to them, at least the Ford ones. Our neighbor with his BMW hadn't had any problems with them so far |O

Ford is using IIRC a soy based plasticiser in the cabling and the synthetic rubber. BMW is using a different plasticiser which is based on a petroleum product, along with using a different sleeving which is not as attractive looking, unlike the Ford tape wrap. Try using some pepper spray in the engine compartment, renewing it monthly, and remove any loose leaf litter and trees from around the car.
Grandpa had issues with mice, they ate his Toyota. His cure was to fill the garage with bowls of Finale liquid and pellets for them to drink. The heat dried out the bodies pretty fast, so not much smell.

It indeed is according to CERN people, see meeting notes (https://indico.cern.ch/event/506407/contributions/1184968/attachments/1265776/1873815/LHC_29042016.pdf), page 11 "Cause: short circuit caused by fouine on 66kV transformer in point 8".
They even had a picture of the (charred) thing and some pictures of the connections damaged by arcing but it seems that somebody probably have insisted those to be removed from the slides.

sounds like "terrible design shuts down Hadron Collider".
Or more accurately, incompetent people behind that terrible design shuts down Hadron Collider.
Unfortunately, those people are too man up to admit their own faults and have to point fingers at that poor weasel.
Even worse, the public bought that finger pointing.
