Just cut something in the PDF file at hand and google should be able to find it in the interwebs.

Biggest problem with these tools is that they add work you check as part of their collection. All this without consent from author.. So basically they commit copyright crime/violation depending on country..

They take work they have no right to use and make money out of it... :P

In my country cops have raided peoples homes for few shared mp3 files. Cant imagine what happens for something like this.

Considering wast amount of information and how fast our information reserves grow, some similarities are often unavoidable when writing language that has well established structure and words..

If that's true, then there's bound to be something on the licence agreement stating that they make a copy and by using their service, you're giving them permission to do so.

That happens here too and is a complete waste of time and resources. It would be better to spend the money on tracking down paedophiles.

And people reword things to try to circumvent these tools.

well duh !  of course they have to.

let;s what would happen if they don't store anything ... they would have nothing to compare with.
if you submit a chunk for checking they include it , so if someone copies yours they can flag it.

these companies operate under the same classification as a library and archival .

they don't commit copyright violation as you cannot download anything from them. They sit on a master library but you have no access to it.

When I went through university, the organisation used the services of 'Turnitin' (http://turnitin.com (http://turnitin.com)).
There is also a service aimed at students called 'WriteCheck' (http://en.writecheck.com (http://en.writecheck.com)) which allows them to submit their work, make alterations before actually submitting it to their education provider. Neither of these are free services though.

Results will obviously vary depending on how crafty the student is. I found if they are clever enough to paraphrase, the software accepts it as being largely original.

I've also come across issues where if the PDF document has certain security/encryption settings enabled or was of a version the system didn't know, the anti-plagiarism software won't read it (but passed it onto the marker anyway). Years ago when I was at university this was a bit of a "workaround" as most students just handed their work in as Microsoft Word files (not saying I cheated or plagiarised anything, but I learnt a lot about the system whilst I was there).

Then if you really wanted to be dishonest, there was also the social hengineering aspect of it. There were some students who after "multiple tries" or "computer failure" couldn't use the Turnitin service, so the markers allowed them to submit their work as a hardcopy. But that's straying off-topic.

Hmm, given the content of OP's recent posts (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/profile/?area=showposts;sa=topics;u=101018), I might advise discretion replying here (and in the other threads), or posting intentional misinformation about such tools...
