Title: What are you listening to?
Post by: TheBay on November 19, 2014, 11:39:04 am
Hoping to start something here,

I enjoy listening to music while I work, I also work with audio equipment so have music playing on devices I am building or repairing.
In the lab I usually have Absolute 80's FLAC streaming.

Think this will be a good thread to suggest some relaxing, interesting or music we haven't heard before.

But at the moment I am listing to:

Fleetwood Mac - All albums, love them and off to see them in June.

Jessie Ware - Devotion
Jessie Ware - Tough Love

Highly recommend you check the above 2 albums out  :-+

I was doing lots of PCB layout last week so was listening to lots of stuff like Pink Floyd and Radiohead which works much better if you listen to whole albums instead of singles.

While I was listening to 'Everything in its right place' by Radiohead I thought about putting together a playlist of songs sort of related to PCB layout. So far I've got:

Everything in its right place - Radiohead
The whole of Parallel Lines by Blondie
The Tracks of my tears - Smokey Robinson
Via - Via
Anything by Boards of Canada
Silkscreen - Psymbionic
Tangled up in Nets - Eric & Magill

it's a collaborative playlist on Spotify to add any you can think of.

I recently found those compilations Ambient Epicuros (https://www.youtube.com/user/TheAmbientepicuros/videos) , and been listening to them while working on my project for a couple days now. Artificial intelligence vol 1-5 goes nicely with writing code for uC, especially when you working on a robot (linefollower) :)

Pink floyd
David Gilmour
Chicane

Dire Straits
little bit of Fleetwood Mac
and good old 70s / 80s power hits

Right now, as I eat dinner, and while I was cooking it: Pentatonix christmas mix.

At work, when I rarely listen to music, it's mostly metal, as that makes others go away, while I enjoy it.

I dig the '80s mix. I also have several cover song mixes, inspired by a local radio station "Cover your ass" theme day.

When at the gym, it's metal when lifting, and house/elecronica when running. I've been listening to Overwerk a *lot* lately when I run.

Mostly movie scores and instrumentals - helps pass the time when doing calculus homework :)
Usually stuff by Hans Zimmer or Michael Giacchino.

Oh, and thanks miguelvp! Definitely worth a listen. :D

Presumably "Fade Away and Radiate" is what happens when you get a short and let the magic smoke out? Or is that when RF gets into the wrong places due to insufficient shielding?

"Will Anything Happen?" is on that first prototype when you first power it up.

"Just Go Away" is when you give up and decide your circuit is never going to work...

I listen to music a lot during work. Mostly stuff like Pink Floyd, The Doors or classical music (Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert etc.). I also enjoy some unusual stuff, like listening to electromagnetic waves of planets in a form of sound. This kind of thing Jupiter sounds (so strange!) NASA-Voyager recording (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3fqE01YYWs#)

Other times I just listen to Richard Feynman clips and Walter Lewin lectures of MIT for pleasure.

Yesterday & today have been listening to 'epic music' (as a youtube search term') for eg
  LqOfPkHGq9U&list=TLoFZzkULC6iM

Sounds like I'm not the only one generally sticking to 60s to 80s music. Most contemporary commercial music doesn't appeal to me either. Long live youtube & YTD video downloader! Here are a few other leads.
Youtube video refs below are to be prefixed by "h t t p s://w w w.youtube.com/watch?v="
(Remove spaces. I don't want any URLs to embed/play here.)

'Game music' is often surprisingly great. Examples:
Journey, by Justin Wintory (pity the game is PS3 only) TLfj3pAlrs4&list=PL60408EBD7150DDA5
  http://austinwintory.bandcamp.com/album/journey (http://austinwintory.bandcamp.com/album/journey)
Others:
Bioshock_infinite, Descent_II, Divinity_Original_Sin, Doom, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex,
  Half_Life, Half_Life_2, Mass Effect, Myst, Myst_II_Riven, Myst_III_Exile, Myst_IV_Revelation,
Quake, Quake_2, Skyrim, Stalker, Unreal, Virtues Last Reward, the Mechwarrior series, etc.
A lot of old games like Doom, Mechwarior had the music tracks as WAVs after the code track.
So they can be ripped directly from the CD if you have it. Just skip the first track.

'Movie soundtracks' - also a huge source.

I like Chinese & Vietnamese music in particular; Japanese & Korean too. Here's some examples:

pM2w6MzMsac  Wulan Tuoya - Horses
U8x3AwwkYCQ  Wulan Tuoya - The Plateau Is Blue
SUN7cKIgn8Y  Qinghai Lake
7apji-hg5j4  Chinese relaxing
rhxmMIixs8I  Zhu Fengbo - Olive Tree
HrjQmZ8t8nQ  Chyi Yu  - Olive Tree
UNRjPBc9rbQ  Chyi Yu - Geordie   (english)
09sqeFuoTLQ  Chyi Yu - Tears  (english)

Then there's Faye Wong (very famous and loved Chinese singer)
4hjWOkjFWM8  If I were really
a_TmhSLeYfo  Passenger
Uj_PM2H087Y  Jiang ai
and many, many more great works of hers you'll find on youtube. Worth looking up the lyrics translations too.

---- Russian folk music. (A good cleansing agent after accidentally stepping in some nasty US zio-media-gov warmongering propaganda. Also 'red army choir')
Katyusha  xG2dJAF1MRM

---- A few examples of 'minor artists', untouched by the commercial rot.
"hang drum"  xk3BvNLeNgw   w6u7wmXcD2Y  747hJQNJpeg  SVJqT_JSSMw  UNJswfXKJ3s
Chooka Parker  (Young Aussie farm kid turns out to be piano prodigy.)
Luna Lee - Korean Gayageum traditional instrument player. Also does amazing covers of old songs.  iOKZxQDcjpY  NfOHjeI-Bns
Sally Ford (eg CD "Births Deaths & Marriages" but can't find youtube copy)
Anna von Hausswolff - Mountains Crave   QbP--RsNj70
Kina Grannis - In Your Arms   IOu0DuxFAT0
Paul Miller - Ghost Upon the Water - Blink of an Eye  _eg-bT7TbiI
Geron Hoy - King of Pangea  JMEdK3MvH8o&index=8&list=UU8vV7ijTbQInXR3vGzdTjTA
Lindsey Stirling   Violin   vxIOUJ7by6U
In-Grid   Tu Es Foutu (You Promised Me)   H8hqP99RdXk

---- Vietnamese pop and folk song.
I came across Vietnamese pop by accident, borrowing a few randomly picked CDs from the local library. Went back for more. So most of my Viet collection is ripped WAVs.
Youtube is vast, but sometimes not vast enough. Plus it's hard to search, when you can't type the special characters. This CD by Yen Phuong isn't on yt. Can only find it here:
htt  p://mp3.zing.vn/album/Di-Vang-Mot-Loai-Hoa-Yen-Phuong/ZWZ97ZUD.html
And that has only 8 tracks, not 10 as on the CD. #8 is my favourite.

My Tâm - Sai (WRONG)       fm--956H2yY
Gil Lê - If I Die Young    7FRgokaxHO0
Yo Girls  (ha ha, very politically incorrect)  JCIUShKXeN4

---- Kpop (ridiculously commercial, but still fun)
2NE1 - Dont Stop The Music        XIcTDFRhVvE
2NE1 - FOLLOW ME                  MAJ6Xk9bnew
4Minute - WHY                     bqYWpzb65rE
Brown Eyed Girls - Abracadabra    ofwFr8o8p0Y
Kan Mi Youn 2011 Papparatzi       iZqst5cgc3Q
SNSD - Echo                       IpCYlRqlxVI
SNSD - Gee                        U7mPqycQ0tQ
SNSD - Run Devil Run              q_gfD3nvh-8
T-Ara - Bye Bye Unofficial MV     _fm8Cm-eTac
T-ara - I Go Crazy Because Of You     LEF5uf2MSKI
T-ara - I'm really hurt               VDVLu0O9foQ
T-ara - Like The Beginning / Like The First Time    6-HG2Z6M4ww  ixKjRJBiwco
T-Ara - Why Are You Being Like This   uGHPB70v_fA
T-ara - Bo Peep Bo Peep [Cute]        -343MuV5BxY
T-ara - Bo Peep Bo Peep MV HD [Sexy]  gpiuGAWz9S0
Rainbow Pixie - Hoi Hoi  4oUtxee1QM8
LEE HI  - ROSE M/V       Ff_SuAzll90
T-ARA _ Sexy Love (Dance Ver. MV)   ShVRP09NCO4
2NE1 - HATE YOU M/V                 NB5jyYD2WEw
2NE1 - 'CRUSH' (Japanese Ver.)      TpC3TBIvRSk

---- Chillout
South Pacific [HD]  E1FUDFS_hvg
soundtrack from Animatrix - Beyond  l4EkevOByFo&list=RDl4EkevOByFo#t=23

Music in foreign languages (that you can't understand) seems to be good for concentration, and often has great beauty. Non-western cultures are mostly uncorrupted by the spiritual rot of nihilist, satanist poison like death metal and rap, genres which have led a lot of Western music down disgusting and self-destructive paths - some would say deliberately led by certain elements.  There are still cultures that value humanist traditional musical qualities of melody and spirit, that are mostly absent (with some exceptions) in 'commercially popular' corporate controlled western music today.

Best thing about death metal - it's a useful indicator of inner state, ie who to avoid.

Listen to this BeeGees cover done By Nina Simone.
If this ain't the definition of groovy!

I've right at the back of the audience in this version, however they have used three audiences mixed together from the three recording sessions. It was done at Abbey Road and their biggest studio can only hold three hundred. Total named backing singers on the record sleeve is about 900.

I'm on an old rock and roll kick. Chuck Berry, The Hollies, Johnny Rivers. Right now I'm hooked on Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues. :)

On of the factoids that popped onto the screen during and episode of Pawn Stars this evening was that 1 in 12 people (American citizens presumably) own a copy of Dark Side of the Moon, so here I am, listening to this utterly plodding, mediocre and boring album. I mean, really. There is hardly anything in the entire first half of the album which could even be called music. Perhaps it's to my disadvantage that I'm not a stoner, but I just don't get it. I concede that this might have been a big deal when it came out, sort of like when McDonalds started selling the cheeseburger, thought I'd rather eat a cheeseburger than subject myself to the torture of trying to stay awake through another listen to this crap.
