What are you listing to? - Music while you work
« on: May 22, 2018, 10:47:44 pm »
I cant not have some tunes on while working, fortunately I work from home most of the time.  My wife can always tell how my day has been by the type and volume of what I'm listening to.  If its 80's pop/rock/British invasion/new wave its been a good day.  If its Metallica/Black Sabbath, Godsmak maybe not as nice a day.  A coworker on in NY (I'm in CA) was complaining he was the only one working on our team this morning so sent a instant message to me of Eric Carmen All By My Self, which lead me to me explaining how that was a rip of Rochmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 (second movement).  Its been a few years since I've listened to Rochmaninoff, so after revisiting No. 2, I had to listen to my favorite No. 3.

In my home shop, I have 400 watts of audio.  I found the dynamic range limits several times today  :bullshit:   ^-^

I like 70s and 80s rock mostly, but my taste in music is very wide ranging. Where my bench is though, there is currently no way to access my collection with any quality, so I listen to Z106.7 on a 25 watt Sherwood receiver with two Radio Shack Minimus 7 speakers. It works fine. I learned long ago that you don't always have to blast music as loud as possible to enjoy it. Heavy metal though, can sometimes possess people I think.

I try to match music to my mood when working too. Default mode is 80/90s pop rock like RHCP. Feeling angsty it will be Die Antwoord or maybe some grunge, industrial, or dark psy trance. In the morning I like ambient, downtempo, synthwave, or lofi hiphop. The best though when I am trying to be/feeling super productive is progressive psy trance.

When I am doing woodworking I like DJ Dadmagent. He does songs I would generally not listen too, but with powertools over the top. Hilarious. Kinda obscure, but some of my friends are friends with him.

I absolutely cannot write software when music is playing or a radio is talking. Radio talk especially blathering on and on prevents you from thinking your own thoughts. Stops you from designing stuff.

I am the opposite, too quite and I think to much and can't get anything real done. If I have something to occupy part of my brain it is easier to achieve more of a flow state where I can just code without thinking about it. Electronics on the other hand I don't know well enough to do that yet, some distraction still helps with lateral thinking though.

I listen to a bit of just about everything from folk to heavy metal but typically gravitate toward classic rock. If I'm trying to write code though I need either silence, or soft classical music is nice sometimes.

Deduct 1 point from your man card for admitting you listen to ABBA.  Its okay, but you shouldn't admit to it.

I've been fortunate enough to see PF in concert twice, 1989 Delicate Sound of Thunder and 1994 Pulse.  I'm a huge Floyd fan.

They were all broke up before they hooked me  :) but we have the group Pink Floyd Experience downunder and been to see them twice. Both times come way without a voice and bruised ribs from the ol' girls elbow.  :horse:
Their The Wall concert was bloody fantastic.
Anyways found all their stuff from almost the beginning of time on the 'net. Early stuff was way out there.  :)

Second record album I ever bought was "Black Sabbath". First concert I ever went to was Black Sabbath. February 13, 1974 Louisville, KY. Going to rock concerts was a big thing in those days, from 1976 to 1984 I saw a lot of the big names at least once. I don't remember a Pink Floyd concert, but that doesn't mean I didn't go to one.

Just listening again to the finest performance of the Brahms Requiem I have ever heard.  Maestro Blomstedt is conducting from memory.

Well, the question was what music do you listen do, not like :) If I'm in a self-hate mood then I need something to suffer to.

Actually, that's not true. It's a little acknowledged reality that nearly all men secretly love ABBA. Embrace what you love and share it! A-ha! And I thought this was a safe place :)

Primordial Radio - rock & metal radio, with no ads.

The 'full' stream is a subscription service, and well worth it IMHO. PM me for a 3 month free trial code  :-+

It depends.

When I'm reading or writing a lot of text, I like to listen to classical music or some post rock/metal, no vocals.
When I'm grinding along some design or code, I usually put something heavier up like progressive metal or `djent` (with extensions into death metal).
Sometimes when I'm a bit tired of listening I also work in just silence.

"Bad" music is particularly off putting to my concentration, as it annoys the crap out of me.
