What charger to use for 3.7v Lithium-Ion battery?
« on: October 13, 2017, 07:55:35 am »
I have a Nokia BL-5J battery (3 actually) and I am looking for an external device that can charge these batteries outside of the phone they go with.
There are specific battery chargers for the BL-5J that exist but I cant find anywhere in Australia that sells them and I dont want to order from some Chinese site and risk getting something that isn't up to the task.

I did find this battery charger https://www.jaycar.com.au/universal-li-ion-ni-cd-ni-mh-battery-charger/p/MB3639 on Jaycar which says it can do Li-Ion batteries.
The batteries I have are 3 pin jobs that say "BL-5J 1320mAh 3.7V 4.9Wh" on the back and on the front they have a plus in a circle then a minus in a circle then an empty circle (presumably the pin-out of the 3 pins)

Can anyone tell me if the Jaycar charger I linked above would be able to charge these batteries or what other options I have? Do I need to buy the hard-to-get special charger specific to the BL-5J? (the battery wasn't used in very many phones so that's why the chargers are probably hard to get)

I have read that it might be possible to just connect wires to the terminals with the right current and voltage but that seems risky and dangerous, I want something that at least has some kind of protection in there.

Oh and I am in Brisbane but can also order from any Aussie online stores that might have something suitable.

I bought the Jaycar charger on the above link (after the guy at Jaycar told me it would be suitable for my battery) and it worked great. Left it in overnight and when I got up this morning it said it was full and everything worked.

I have this one:  https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00UHCQ4RY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Uses USB which is nice as it's something fairly easily available.  Says it's unavailable though but there may be similar ones.   I like that it auto detects so I just keep it in a box where I store all my rechargeable batteries and everything I need is in one place as far as batteries/power for camping.  I can plug it into my solar power pack and charge the batteries.

It's a slower charger though as it's meant to slow charge batteries.  Like a typical 18560 takes almost all day.  But like, in a camping situation I would just plug it into the solar power pack and then let it go overnight, or throughout the day when I'm doing other stuff.  Ex: not something you plug it and wait after.

Bzzzt, wrong. You cannot apply the language rules for German to English. In English, it’s a “rechargeable battery”. (Or if you want to be pedantic, a rechargeable cell, if it’s just a single cell.) But we haven’t used the word “accumulator” for energy storage devices for a very long time — it’s an archaic term.

P.S. In English, we don’t capitalize every noun, as you do in German. In your sentence (in English), neither “Battery” nor “Accumulator” should be capitalized.

Would take a little bit of creativity and some solder.  :P  Try not to get the polarity mixed up.  >:D

Suppose you'd want to make a jig of sorts if you plan to recharge it regularly and not just as a one time thing.

You can also convert your phone to use an extended run battery pack: https://imgur.com/gallery/rMinB :D
