Title: What date was the moon landing?
Post by: Circlotron on June 11, 2019, 01:10:16 pm
Everybody says it was 20th July 1969, but here in Australia I seem to remember it was the 21st, not 20th. Seeing this event happened away from the surface of the earth, not at a particular location on earth and hence time zone, how would you define the date and time?

"how would you define the date and time?"

By your local time of course, there are advantages living on the 0 time line, :) although most people in the UK still don't know day it is.

the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours later on July 21 at 02:56:15 UTC.

Okay... so they landed on the 20th and went walkies on the 21st. Maybe that's what caused some of the confusion.

In this day and age of global communications time zones are an anachronism we should get rid of.

That or let's say it is now December in Australia and they are getting ready to celebrate Christmas.

I would define the date/time of the landing as Central Daylight Time (CDT) as that was the time in Houston, the home of Mission Control.

Aviation and Spaceflight are always timed in UTC.

Aviation and Spaceflight are always timed in UTC.

Problem: UTC was introduced in 1972. GMT might be a better answer.

About time too! It created problems for no useful purpose.

I find time zones to be convenient, but DST serves no useful purpose at all and I hate it. Twice a year I feel jetlagged for several days after it changes. An hour doesn't sound like much but it sure wreaks havoc with my internal clock.

This is important to me because I plan on being somewhere at that exact time 50 years later ;D
I haven't checked the actual local time equivalent yet, guess I'd better do that...

EDIT:

I predict you'll be at the Parkes Observatory.

It happened on the moon, so only ELT is relevant.  Earth Lunar Time

I remember the landing and the walk very well. I was a nine-year-old and I watched it all live on TV. One of my first memories is watching the launch of the first Gemini mission on my fifth birthday. I saw all subsequent launches up until well into the shuttle era when it started getting routine.

Gotta admit it was at least a good guess :)
