What do you think "Electronic Workbench" means ? --- Survey
« on: September 29, 2015, 08:16:59 pm »
Hi

I think this contest is for electronic equipment that is used to work on electronics:

http://www.nutsvolts.com/pages/the_workbench_challenge_2015

Quote: "  What is “essential” to an electronics workbench?"

Dave says a "work bench" is a physical thing you have to build to put electronic stuff on:
"EEVblog #679 - How To Build A Small Electronics Work Bench "

Could the difference be "workbench" vs "work bench"?  YT posters use both words for both ideas.

Is there anyway to make it clearer which is which other than a space?

The first thing when I saw the contest was benches and shelves because that was the first thing I built in order to put the stuff on.

Edit:  Added "Survey" to title

You forgot one option: a computer program to simulate circuits. That must be about 25 years old by now.

That was what I thought this would be about.   I think National Instruments bought that package.   Gone like Saber.

It's in the title "bench".
If you use your floor to build stuff, that's your bench. If it's your kitchen table, that's your bench.

I agree "bench" is anywhere where you build stuff.

Nuts and Bolts uses "workbench" to mean stuff.  Would you know what I mean if I asked you to put together a $200 workbench?

An electronic workbench can be your kitchen table with a soldering iron, a Simpson 260 and a hammer.

I think the "Electronic Workbench" is the bench on which you do the work.
An "Electronics Lab" or "Electronics Workshop" is the place where the combination of Workbench and Tools, Test Equipment, etc are located.
An "Electronics Lab" may also be used for another purpose. I have seen plenty of people here whose bedroom is also their lab.
I approach the thinking of all of my posts using AI in the first instance. (Awkward Irregularity)

What I was thinking, maybe someday I can put together a contest like Nuts and Bolts.  I wonder if I could use Kickstarted to raise funds for prizes.  I think cash is best because of shipping costs and customs.

I just do not know what to call the "thing".  I wonder if "lab" can be used?  After this post dies away I just may ask what names should be given to "stuff"  Maybe stuff?

I like the way Nuts and Bolts set up their rules by not allowing used, ebay, Chinese Amazon, etc.  I think this is a flaw in one of Dave's video.  Maybe he would do a video on the list from the winner.

thanks everyone

For me bench is holy place. My temple where i can focus my natural way to something i like doing. In this case doing electronics stuff... It has all tools i most often need. All has its rightfull place. Yes it does include small netbook with extra monitor for reading datasheets, doing some programming for pic/atmel parts. No i dont use simulation software yet, but one day...
Electronics, Linux, Programming, Science... im interested all of it...

Both IMHO (physical space to do the work + tools to do it with, as one is worthless without the other).   :)

And I actually have an old copy of Electronics Workbench software package, on 3.5" floppy no less (I liked it for what it was).  >:D  FWIW, it's NI's MultiSIM package now.

The questions is whether the adjective modifying the object "Workbench" describes the composition of the workbench or its use.

I think an "Electronic Workbench" is a workbench that has a significant amount of electronic devices in its construction.  Electronic does not denote any objects just their properties so it must describe the composition of the workbench itself, like a "Wooden Workbench".

I think an "Electronics Workbench" is workbench for working on electronics because that word can denote other objects.

Isn't the ambiguity of the English language wonderful?
