I acquired a bunch of Proxxon stuff which according to my research was part of a Kit numbered 28514. At least the low end drill stand only rarely appears in Google search photos and only in select European country websites.

There is a Red plastic device (see photos) that swings freely and is retracted normally. However it has a sort of cam inside that causes it to rise up about 3 mm or so when the drill is lowered about 5-6mm.  The photo shows it sticking out further than it would when upright.

If you google "proxxon 28514" the first two images is pretty much all I have been able to find.

I don't know what function it can serve but I also dont know if I am missing some part. Does anyone know? I'll be buggered if I can figure it out. I'm reluctant to bias anyone but all I came up with was there could be a missing microswitch that turns on the drill motor when the drill is lowered a bit. But I can't see how it was mounted securely.

Hopefully these photos will help.

Pic158 shows how the moving part contacts the red part at the point the profile causes the device to pivot and rise above the slot on the upper surface. Other than that it faps about in the breeze.

I had a look through a few manuals on the Proxxon site for similar products but couldn't find anything that resembled your unit. My guess would be that it is some type of engageable depth stop or plunge restrictor, perhaps even a safety device or lockout in case kids have access to the machine.

Or even a depth indicator perhaps...

All your photos are close ups and can’t really tell, but looks like a part of a rotary tool stand. The stand goes in the smaller opening, the tool goes in the larger one. With the spring inside and everything. Certainly not part of the latest catalog...

Those are just parts, only the main body for the drill stand, as whole complete set you need the base, the vertical rod, handle and etc.

Although this images are not Proxxon, and not exact shape, just examples for clue where that piece supposed to fit in.

Yes it is a drill stand but probably a fairly old one or one that seems to only be part of a kit. My question was specifically for the little red component that pivots when the drill is lowered 5-6mm. I don't know what function it serves.

Thanks @Muttley Snickers for the links. I was kinda hoping a German or near neighbour could post a link to a similar site in their country. That's where I think the answer lies.

This bunch of stuff which I bought second-hand on Ebay(AU) was part of a deceased estate. Aside from not getting a power supply that is why I tend to think it is both old and incomplete.

It could be that the little red lever aligns with the switch in the handle of a drill which has been mounted in the clamp. So when the bracket is slid down, it presses the switch and powers on the drill.

Interesting thought. However the Proxxon drill it came with doesn't have that design. It has a speed control knob/On-Off switch combined.

Also the red lever is only about 1mm thick plastic. Not all that strong. If pressed it will bend and flick off and get stuck behind/ beside the bit it normally seems to contact. If it activated a switch it would be a microswitch. But no drill or powersupply I've found in a Proxxon catalog has any facility to connect a switch.

One thing I noticed on looking at my photos again is the metal rod that can be seen covered in some brown gunk. That ends flush on the top and has a flush nut on the bottom. So it runs top to bottom but seems to serve no function. Nothing slides on it. I haven't tested what the brown stuff is. I assume grease but it isn't nearby as I type.

There has to be something missing. Otherwise it is a mystery all right.

Hello Wilfred,

Do you still have the proxxon drill stand?
I bought one of these drill stands second hand without any documentation am I am wondering also what the red plastic tab is for. Have you figured it out?
The main purchase was a power supply with one fixed speed 12V drill plus a much smaller engraver and a flex shaft, the stand came with the rest. I am also puzzled by the red tab.

Thanks
Melbru
