What happens to your equipment when you passed away?
« on: November 27, 2023, 08:01:20 am »
For years you have bought and built specialized equipment and tools, pile of expensive parts that maybe in your family only you know its real value and how to use them.

Have you ever thought what is going to happen to all your stuff, do you have any plan or you just don't care what happens after you died?

Ask to have the buried with you for afterlife use, like in good old times :)

Otherwise, there was already a fairly recent thread about it, try to look it up. Everyone's answer: take care of it yourself, because no one else will.

In a way, that's not as crazy as you might think.

Imagine a centralized database of donors, equipment, prices and potential recipients with approximate locations.  If a donor passes away, the executor has a list of potential buyers ready to go.

What if living like a king involves having all your stuff around?

not so. who is to know when you will go? but God.  just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment for his life on earth.
in so all inanimate objects will be left behind. as heaven has no need for it.

Who “plans” it? That’s outside our scope.

Generally if you're part of community maker spaces or groups, people tend to help each other out with estate sales. I haven't thought about it more seriously but perhaps if I get sick or lucky enough to get into my mid 60s or 70s then I'd probably downsize as much as possible, at least with the expensive items. Smaller ones can be donated to interested people, people aren't going to turn down freebies.

I just had a thought: perhaps when I get old I'll fit my scopes, welders, cars and other stuff with watchdog timers. If it hasn't seen "keep alive" for some time, it'll self-destruct.

We could fit people with that. :-DD

This is a difficult subject.   My dad is having some health problems, and has decided to get rid of all of his stuff.  I had to go to the thrift store and get the power supply he built when I was 7.  (with help from the neighbor and our friend.)  I also saved some old equipment my dad got from a surplus dealer.  (I've mentioned them in past posts)  I found the receipt in one of them, dated 1976.  I don't have any kids.  I don't think anyone else cares about this stuff.

Maybe my nephew.  I should find out.  When my mom said he was interested in electricity/electronics, I told my mom to give him dad's multimeters.

Clearly you are bound and/or not really interested in electronics.

Just wait; you'll change you mind >:D

I'm fairly certain when that time comes, what happens to my "stuff" will matter very little to me.

There are two types of people in the world:

1. Those who would buy from the widow her husband's test equipment for a fair price, or help sell them off for her for a fair price.
2. Those who will offer the widow an extremely low price, gloat at the haul, and resell them for a big profit for himself.

There are decent people and scumbags everywhere. I have met both.

Everything we have is subject to aging. My dog is getting old and she will probably go away before me. In our lab there are some complex instruments like a Lecroy WR204 that i am having difficulties to keep alive.
Perhaps the internet age answer is: Convert everything to electronic documents to make it live longer (virtualization).
