You raise a good question.

I too have been wondering this myself on the best way to store I/O cards for computers. Currently I have them in boxes sorted by PCI/PCI-ex/ISA etc... I probably have about 100-120 cards. All in antistatic bags of course, but I don't like the idea of them being squashed up against each other. There has to be a better solution. Any ideas?

for my cards i have a pcb that is just sockets and i plug them into it lol i have them layered in a plastic tote with 3 layers in each ... it was not the cheapest way but they are sorted and confined and not squashed together

Not that I have that many parts, but for loose parts I generally just leave them in whatever Mouser or Digi-Key shipped them in. Sometimes there's excess bulky padding and I'll remove that. Then I just file them in plastic, shoe-box sized containers, separated by type. I keep a spread sheet listing everything I've bought and an approximate quantity along with which box number it's in.

I use plastic containers from candy store, they have tons of empty one going to trash all the time... Of course components are still in antistatic bags inside this, but atleast its resistors on ine box, capasitors on another, etc...

Can see throw them, large enough so can print good label on them (Lid and front side). Stackable somewhat, etc... And more importantly to me, they are free to get so can get big pile of them...

The best solution I have ever seen is use vidmar (cabinet of metal grounded chart drawers).  Each drawer can hold over 100 bins, depending on size.  In the bins of ICs use conductive foam.  Use large bins for trays.  Use racks, bins or studs in drawers for reels.
One con.  Setting up is pricy.
