What is the difference between ACD input and channels?

Was going through some of the datasheets for highspeed ADCs, some of them had
Inputs = 8
Channels = 4

What's the difference?

A differential input might use 2 channels.

Or it can have X number of inputs multiplexed to Y number of actual converters inside the chip.
