What mic is she using?
« on: June 09, 2022, 05:40:20 am »
One of my new favourite singers, this is the STUPENDOUSLY incredible Lucy Thomas, one of our beautiful British women. Anyway, does anyone know what mic she's singing into? I am not up to speed... thank you. Have you ever heard SUCH vocal range? This is one blessed microphone, whatever it is!

Not my style, but she sings very well.   :-+
For some reason her voice reminded me of Jennifer Rush https://youtu.be/uoN44y4BfsA

The only question these days is if the singer used autotune or not https://youtu.be/FFAjC7iD1xY, I hope not.  :)

Truly heavenly listening to her. She is also somewhat easy on the eye, and one can see she sings effortlessly, and has a nice manner, so that makes it lovely to listen AND watch!

Check out Wings of Pegasus.  https://www.youtube.com/c/wingsofpegasus

He's got Autotune Detection down to a science - literally.  Turns out there's an app for that!  ;)

On first video there is a LOT of autotune. On second there is a bit of it but tastefully used.

Weird part is that there are some singers that use it sometimes despite not needing it to correct errors (because they sing very accurately) but because audience got accustomed to that sound, so they use it as sound effect...

Neumann

The shape of the basket doesn't look right. Given the hundreds of copies and look-alikes coming out of China, it's almost impossible to say what this really is.

Definitely no Neumann but some cheap Chinese not-even-look-alike. Do note how they put the two girls on opposite sides of what is obviously a cardiod microphone.  :-DD

Some of the real Neumann microphones (e.g., M149) can be switched between cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-eight response.

So the Mic is a Editor Keys Studio series SL300.

It is a standard condenser mic with a Caroid Pattern (symbol is shown on the mic)

I'm actually surprised at the quality of the recordings.

A cheapo USB mike that appears to be out of production. Fixed pattern cardioid as indicated by the symbol below the basket. Makes a nice prop if you hide the USB connector.  ;)

it's a Shure KSM44 (not the current-model 44A).

The logo is clearly Shure. The pattern select and pad control switches are clearly visible.

Actually, I don't know what it is!

Agreed. My ears spotted it from a mile away. Yuk.

Yeah. The lower-end (up to about $1000) Neumann have fixed directivity. The M149 is $4000+. A bit unusual to find outside of studios.

All of the usual brands offer large-diaphragm condenser mics in versions with fixed pattern (say the AKG 214) or multiple patterns (like the venerable 414). The Shure KSM44 is multi pattern, the KSM42 is single pattern.

There are a lot of good mikes out there. One doesn’t have to splurge on a Neumann to get something good. (I think it’s one of those situations where the cost/quality curve is very steep at the beginning, and flattens out quickly. Going from the $1 mike in your computer or phone earphones to a $50 mike is a massive, day-and-night improvement. From the $50 to a $150 gets you a big improvement. Going from that to a $500 mike gets you a modest, but noticeable improvement. Going from $500 to $5000 is basically just little changes in the details. Speakers are the same way. Of course, in all cases, I’m referring to choosing the best you can get at that price point, so not necessarily within the same manufacturer.)

Quite right.

But still, the devil is in the details and problems arise where you wouldn't expect them. One prob with the cheaper switchable-pattern mics is the symmetry of their figure-8. Use one for M/S or worse still two of them for Blumlein and you'll find that localisation is all over the place.

Sure. That said, it's always funny to see people judging "sound quality" of alleged high-end audio gear in Youtube videos.

Yep, or comparing the color quality of displays!
