Amount of material, support, help and ready to go programs, scripts and utilities for raspberry pi is really huge. For orange pi (or other pi-s), not that much. And don't get fooled by the fact a lot of people will tell you "it's almost the same".
Go for raspberry pi and once you get familiar with it, experiment with other platforms.

The (quad core) RPI 3 model B is markedly faster than previous iterations, so much so that it makes a passably fast "desktop" which takes up almost no precious desktop space. If you do that, however, try to use a real (USB) hard drive, because flash cards don't like being written to a lot, and likely will eventually fail in that scenario.

This.

+1

Even if it's only for playing around, when something you try goes sideways, the amount of available resources and people familiar with the platform could make the difference between happiness and throwing the thing in the trash (letting it gather dust on a shelf or in a drawer is about the same ending).
