Title: What pitch are these?
Post by: Things on July 13, 2013, 10:00:12 am
Hi guys, trying to do a bit of work in my laser cutter, popped the side panel open and found they haven't included the extra terminals! Damn!

I have seen these before, they're those removable terminal block thingies - but the odd thing with these is they're teeny! Not like the huge 5.08mm pitch ones.

Does anyone know what to look for for the smaller ones? I tried 2.54mm pitch but didn't really get anything?

3.5mm and 3.81mm (0.15") are the most common of the smaller types.  Even a steel rule is good enough to measure the pitch.

For a long time, they were more common in 0.15" (3.81mm), then as metric took hold 3.5mm is becoming more common,
especially in new stuff. Most the industrial stuff I use still uses imperial. They DON'T interconnect, so get it right. Altronics / Jaycar etc
all have them (plus RS, Farnell etc etc)

grab some bootlace crimps (ferrules) while you're there too.

We bought a heap of ferrules from Altronics, but got the tool (hex crimp shape) from eBay for about $50 I think.  They sure do make wiring into terminals neat.   :)

Ferrules are a must have! When visiting a customer a few weeks ago I encountered a machine with tinned strands under screw terminals. Yikes!  :scared:

I thought it would be well known by now that such practise is a real fire hazard.

Regarding the 3.5mm pitch connectors, I've found that different brands are not always interchangeable.

We tend to use locally sourced ones (Sanhe Contact), but found the plugs don't fit properly into the sockets on some (3rd party) Chinese assembled boards we bought.

Without a 3rd brand for comparison I really don't know which one is not "standard".

Phoenix Contacts make a massive range, have a look at their products to see if you can find a match
