For those of you in the UK, you might want to download this while you're still able. It might not matter if they make you hand in your current smartphones, but it might be worth a shot.

This particular system appears to be well-vetted by Ed Snowden and others. The code is open sourced as all good encryption should be.

I like the new version. Far more integrated than the old TextSecure. Whisper Systems have been around for a while. Their products work quite well.

I can only recommend this as well.
For all sensitive stuff I have been using it.
This is what "Trillian" used to be for the PC
