It's just interesting to know, if you do some physical activity (not just sports) on a regular basis - what do you do?
For example I like MTB freeride and downhill. And I really enjoy mixed martial arts (constantly training).
Also I'm really good at couchpotatoing - training not so often, but when I do, I put all the effort in to that ;D
So, what's YOUR drug?
-
Well I'm captain of my uni table tennis team :P Though several people have commented they don't consider it a sport. Olympics, anyone?
Also ordinary tennis and I like a good walk .
-
When I was younger 20's I was following KYOKUSHINKAI karate lessons, now days 40's just long rides with my bicycle. ;)

I haven't done the organised sport thing since I was about 10.
Whilst not a sport, I go to the gym 4-5 times a week where possible (used to be 7 days), doing mostly high rep training BodyPump and boxing. I used to do BodyCombat but that's no good on my knee.
Picture the enthusiasm I show on the videos, translated to gym workouts, and you'll get some idea of the intensity I put into that ;D
I am technically a qualified fitness instructor.
I do canyoning of course in the summer months, other abseiling, and bushwalking.
Was big into geocaching until it slowly wore off.
Bike riding occasionally (or to the gym).
But that's about it really.
Before my late 20's I did absolutely nothing like that at all.
Dave.
-
Raise my three teenagers. Believe me, that's sport!
-
quite a relief to know Dave did not start to do all those cool sports until 30s as I am not doing much in my 20s except some occasional Basketball, Soccer, day hike, horse riding and swimming. Now living in a city with 30+ million people around you, breathing questionable air and eating food that has to feed these 30 million people thus you would know the quality. Working out would not be a great idea here in Shanghai. Swimming is good but one might feel like a dumpling in a big pot if you may.
Anyone living in a crowded, noisy, sunshineless and humid area please leave some advises.
Thanks in advance. I am 27 and born Kazakh. Big fan of great natural environment.

badminton, table tennis, i can do volley ball a bit, but hard to find team nowadays, and regularly... push up until sweating like mad in the middle of the night. but its proven for many years that my calory intake is more than the usage, so they accumulated in my belly. was young is bodybuilder going to gym facility in my U. after study i'm more like a "belly builder".

Yeah, just like my couchpotatoing. ))

I used to do lots of cycling and swimming when I was younger but stopped for various reasons, then put on weight.
Just over a year ago I went on a diet, lost the weight but realised I should do some exercise, not only to keep the weight off but to remain healthy.
I now try to go running every day and normally do a couple of mile. Twice a week I do jujitsu and don't run as far before I train. The difficult thing will be keeping up the running through the winter.
I recommend everyone should run at least a mile a day to keep fit, even if they don't need to loose any weight.
-
I play tennis, do enduro, MTB freeride and ocasionally I go running for 8km to 12km.
Ohh I forgot to mention snowboard, but only one week per year.
-
do enduro
I did that only once ;D , and it was a crazy snow ride on the mountain with another two friends with Yamaha DT200 and I was had my Honda AX-1 with the fairing plastics removed.
In about 90 minutes of riding, I could not feel my arm , my ass was still operational .. LOL ;D ;D ;D

It seems that many people just don't understand, that physical activity is not just for loosing weight. If all people would do at least a little bit of jogging every day + don't eat too much, the clinics would loose a lot of their patients.

Scubadiving..
soon 500 dives in the Read Sea the last 5 years..
The best way of relaxing in the world.. could be nuclear war on the surface.. as soon as i get my head under..its total calm. More relaxed when i get up, than i was when i jumped into..

This is not an electrics or electronics topic. I will go off trail here, I like recumbent bicycling. I used like to ski race, but it got too expensive, so the most I can do is in line roller skate skiing around the block. I like bread boarding circuits, because etching the boards get difficult. This is not an amateur astronomy blog, but I like to use my robotic GOTO Celestron Nexstar 5 to look at Jupiter in the evenings.
-
Cycle 60 miles a week. 6 miles to work and back every day come rain (including snow) or shine. I'm 51 this month and apart from the occasional ache now and then I enjoy seeing the seasons come and go on my bike.
David.

i have a 80's bianchi road bike i converted to fixed gear. i ride daily if the weather is nice.

I have to disagree, running is bad for your knees and joints.
Good technique power walking and/or hill walking can be an equivalent (if not better) workout.

I think swimming is one of the best! Great workout for the lungs!

i heard its the most well balanced workout. i'm going swimming this evening with kids, yay. just going to teach em how to.
I have to disagree, running is bad for your knees and joints.

then i think good technique in "running" will also help. use proper shoes and knee strap etc. the good thing about "running" compared to "walking" is we can boost our stamina faster. my mate used to advice me to do regular jogging if i want to maintain/increase stamina during badminton"ing, but never got time to do it seriously (still weight gaining :P). just my 2cnts.
so the most I can do is in line roller skate skiing around the block.
i forgot to tell, i was a "hobbiest inline skate hockey player" as well ;)

duh dude! you have better dream recall than i am. :P

The bad thing about swimming is it doesn't give the joints a good workout so the mussels become stronger than the joints.
I have to disagree, running is bad for your knees and joints.

Running long distances is bad for the joints but you need to put it into perspective: I'm only talking about doing a mile or two a day, not a marathon. It also depends on the surface, running pavements are worse for the joints than grass or a rubber track.
The disadvantage with walking is it doesn't give the heart and lungs such a good workout.
Either way doing running, swimming or walking is better than no exercise at all.
never got time to do it seriously (still weight gaining :P). just my 2cnts.
Then make time. My daily exercise routine only takes 15 minutes and I feel better for it.
its proven for many years that my calory intake is more than the usage, so they accumulated in my belly. was young is bodybuilder going to gym facility in my U. after study i'm more like a "belly builder".
In my experience if you're moderately overweight doing more exercise alone is a very poor way to loose weight. This is because burning more calories just increases appetite so you eat more. In order to loose weight, you need to focus more on your diet; get that sorted first before worrying too much about exercise.
Are you mostly fat round the middle?
-
Are you mostly fat round the middle?
i'm not worry too much of my fat. yes the belly is bulging. i think part of it is fat, and part of it, i dont know.. "bulged stomach" i think due to bad eating habit (drink water while eating). i'm not that seriously overweight, thats why i keep delaying for exercise. anyway, i think i found a new team for playing badminton (regularly 3 days a week), its been a year or so since i left the previous team. fat is not so serious issue, high blood pressure is. anyway, i'll work on it + my herb supplement/diet.
-
What do you think about cycling and volleyball? I started using a bike to get around the city this year's spring until it got cold around a month ago. This way I was doing at least 6.5 kilometers per day. And volleyball is the only sport I truly love to do, unfortunately this is the last semester before I'm getting engineer's degree and my schedule was so tight I couldn't enroll to my university's PE course on volleyball again. But I'm sure I'll do it next semester.
-
For example I like MTB freeride and downhill.
Cool, what kind of bike do you have?

That's not true at all. Drinking water whilst eating is actually a very good thing to do. The water delays the food's passage through your digestive system which makes you feel full for longer and helps your body can absorb more nutrients. People who suffer from eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa often drink too much water or diet carbonated drinks because it makes them feel full but doesn't contain any calories so they don't feel the need to eat.
Your overweight because you eat more calories than you need, pure and simple. You'll probably find drinking more water before meals will result in weight loss, rather than gain. If you stop drinking water with your meals you'll probably put on more weight.
Oh and you know I said this:
In my experience if you're moderately overweight doing more exercise alone is a very poor way to loose weight. This is because burning more calories just increases appetite so you eat more. In order to loose weight, you need to focus more on your diet; get that sorted first before worrying too much about exercise.
That may be true, but you're still better for doing exercise, even if doesn't result in any weight loss.
For example, suppose you're 9 pounds (about 4kg) overweight, so you embark on a six month exercise programme consisting of running two miles every day but fail to loose any weight. Now you may think it's a total waste of time but the reverse is true. Assuming you've stuck to your exercise programme, your blood pressure, cholesterol and insulin resistance will have all improved as your heart will be stronger and some of the fat tissue would have been replaced with muscle tissue.
i'm not that seriously overweight, thats why i keep delaying for exercise anyway, i think i found a new team for playing badminton (regularly 3 days a week), its been a year or so since i left the previous team. fat is not so serious issue, high blood pressure
That will do you a world of good.
is. anyway, i'll work on it + my herb supplement/diet.
I think eating less fat, processed carbohydrates (white bread, sugar, chips, white rice etc.), more fruit and green vegetables and lean meat and fish (more prawns, chicken breast, lean beef etc. and less fish fingers, burgers, sausages etc.) will help more than herbal supplements.

I feel strange because out of everyone I know, I eat junk food all the time, drink pop and generally most people would think I lead an unhealthy lifestyle.. but I'm skinny and I'm in general good health besides my asthma. Maybe as I age I won't be as lucky.

How old are you?
Are you still growing?
Are you always busy?
It's possible to be a healthy weight and still eat mostly junk food and drink fizzy pop, as long as you don't eat more calories than you need. Of course this doesn't mean you're healthy, you could even be underweight and malnourished on such as diet: the latter may be true even if you're not underweight as you have enough energy but insufficient vitamins and minerals.

I'm 22, I'd say I'm still growing and yes I'm extremely busy usually. Yeah, I might need some vitamin supplements, I feel dehydrated a lot and drinking pop really doesn't help. I feel addicted though.

I'm 22
wait until you are 10yrs old married :D. i was alot healthier than you when i was at your age. ;)
i do aware and educated on dietary (carb, protein, fat, vit) intake and body health care, my mom is a nurse, so keep advising me on that. but the devil inside just keep saying "wait" and "wait". :P
anyway i'm now 87±1kg, 5'5" height... not so overweight right? ;)
-
anyway i'm now 87±1kg, 5'5" height... not so overweight right? ;)
I'm 29. I'm 5'8.5 (174cm) tall and weigh just under 10 stone (140lb or 63.5kg). The fact I'm younger than you shoudln't come into it, the metabolism changes very little between 30 to 60.
I'm 22
At 22 you should've finished growing. If you're eating too much you'll put on weight within a year or two, if not you'll stay the same or loose more weight.
Are you a student?
-
What do you think about cycling and volleyball?
It's hard to stay within the court and can be restrictive for space, particularly when others in your team are also cycling.

I find its the one on the unicycle juggling the knives you have to keep an eye on, especially when he goes to spike the ball.

I do fitness with my Wii ;D.

fat is not so serious issue, high blood pressure is
Agreed. As a Kazakh I've seen quite lots of people suffering from hyper blood pressure. Search Kazakh diet you would see nowadays urban Kazakh still like the traditional meat oriented food such as Horse meat/fat sausages, wind dried horse/camel/lamb/geese, salty butter, high fat cream, wind dried yoghurt, and very salty milk tea on hour bases. My father used to take hyper blood pressure pills every day while he's kept a typical heavy meat and salt taker mentioned above. Last year in Nov. I persuaded him to move to Sanya the sea side resort town in the south where he had to take fruits and vegetables a lot since there's no lamb available and he eats halal. Within months he lost his "second chin" and much of his belly. He's happy and energetic and most important he stopped taking pills coz his blood pressure returned to normal.
Thus I recommend people move to a nice sea side warm town.
BTW, my father did not work out except he worked as a masseur?massagist, kind of labor work.

I found when I left uni and started working full time I started getting heavier and more sluggish of mind - after a year or so of this I found Aikido, it's been a life changer for me.
Training 2-4 times a week with some random exercise in between (inc yoga) makes such an enormous difference to how you feel which directly impacts how clearly you think, it's just essential.
Seeing as so much of this engineering/designing worklife involves sitting in front of a computer or building stuff on your desk means you absolutely have to do something physical to make up for all the sitting-on-arse time.

I do TaeKwonDo when I am not too lazy and running a few miles here and there. Rest is exercise I get from moving the mouse
-
I'm a mad keen cyclist- I ride to work every day (about 10km). I also race mountain bikes in 24Hr Enduro events, marathons (50 and 100Km) and do a bit on the road too.
I have four bikes;
A dedicated Road Race bike (Giant TCR Advanced)
A dedicated commuting machine (Giant Seek)
A Go-fast mountain bike (Giant XTC Advanced)
A "jump off stuff" mountain bike (Giant Reign)
I was pretty much sedentary until a few years ago too!
-
I do
Karate
Running
Swimming.
Just so hard to fit it all in, but its good to do something go crazy if i didn't

Archery ever day, jogging and gym 2 times in week.

I just sold my bike, and looking for something better for the next season. I had Specialized BigHit with 888RCV.

anyway i'm now 87±1kg, 5'5" height... not so overweight right? ;)
Sorry to break it to you but that makes your BMI 31.9 which makes you obese.
See calculator linked below:
http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/Healthyweightcalculator.aspx (http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/Healthyweightcalculator.aspx)
Now I admit that BMI isn't perfect because it doesn't take account of your frame size or muscle tone but it's so high in your case you're almost certainly carrying too much weight.
-
ok! ok checked, i should aim 65kg. thats 23kg down.
-
Hah, I am very lean and in good shape...I run and work out everyday and keep a strict diet. That calculator says I am overweight.
-
ha you made me feel better! :D
-

Muscle weighs more than fat.
As I said the BMI isn't always a good indicator. I'm probably slightly underweight as I can see all my ribs when I take my shit off but that calculator says I'm a healthy weight. Another rule of thumb is to measure your waist round your belly button, if it's more than your height plus 20%, you probably need to loose a bit.
-

just did that. its half my height. i think if its close to ones height, he will be excessively obeise beyond scale.

Mmmm, rich parents, $1600+ FS bike... remember you were telling me how it's not about a bike but how you ride it? I'm sure you never bottomed out that fork. Maybe buy some decent test gear for the money. ;D

Well, first of all I bought this bike with my own money, that I worked hard to get. Secondly I did bottomed out that fork (rear susp. too) regularly. Cuz we've got 5+ meter drops and 12+ meter bigairs with almost flat landing.
And cut it out to spit your venom at me ;D

I didn't create a new topic. I'll ask here.
Do you like mountain climbing?
I like this kind of sport, expeditions.
I found this article (https://mountainplanet.com/blog/how-much-money-and-time-you-will-need-to-climb-all-7-summits-1969) in the blog about most famous mountain climbing, the cost of equipment, expeditions and tips for beginners. It inspired me.
What advice do you have more? Which mountains did you climb?
-
As a good Brazilian, soccer twice a week.
-
I walk my dog at least 10km every day, that knackers me enough without other sports.
-
In the summer I ride my bycicle and two years ago I have also picked up swimming but neither at a fast pace.
Mountain climbing is not for me but I don't say no to a hike over rougher terrain though. A couple of months ago Dave shot a video in the Blue Mountains where he tested the Keysight heavy duty DMM. I'd very much like to make such a trip (without the DMM).
-
I take it you have a very active dog? The only way I'd get my dogs to go 10km is if I put them in the car and drove 10km. The one didn't even make a full walk around the neighborhood (maybe 1km) - I had to carry her the last bit of the way home. Now I let them outside, they chase a squirrel to the corner of the yard where it goes over or under the fence, they act real tough for a few minutes, then trot back to the house, exercise done for the day. Couch potato dogs for couch potato me. I really need to do something though, I am getting rather disgusted with myself which instead of inspiring me to put the fork down, makes me go at crap I shouldn't be. Just switching to healthy food and changing nothing else would probably help me drop a good bit of extra weight. Running is out, I have severe arthritis in both knees and some days it's hard to just walk from the parking lot to my office. Using the stairs instead of the elevator is right out. In the past I was able to use an elliptical machine. Haven't tried lately.
-
No sport as such but walking and, if all goes well with a minor surgery, back to the mud running (see the AVI) later this year after some extensive gym work.
-

He is a border collie (sheepdog) and would walk much further if I could manage it. I do it by choice as apart from the company he in effect forces me to exercise and that can only help with my weight.

Watching the grass grow

I chuck darts and her indoors chucks everything else, if it was made an Olympic sport she would get the gold. ::)

Cycling is one of my hobbies... Few years ago, I participated with my work colleagues to Vätternrundan cycling event in Sweden. Lot of people there, on road for the whole night :) Occasionally also touring cycling in summer -> then I carry all the needed stuff with me (sleeping bag, tent, gas burner, food etc...)
-
The 100 meter dash.
Which reminds me, I need to buy another multimeter. >:D
On serious note I've never been much into sports, but if that counts I do have a weight set that I try to use every now and then. Doing the 5x5 weightlifting program. Even only doing it seldomly I actually have been seeing some gains. Mostly doing it to semi stay in shape as I'm not really that active. I really need to get more active though before it catches up with me. Need to take up snow shoeing or cross country skiing or something. Show shoeing sounds easier to get into.
-
Orienteering. Just running around makes no sense to me, orienteering adds the reason why to run. It's not just the speed of running, the objective is to complete the course in the fastest time and that requires really good route planning and just enough speed to not make any mistakes. In the summer time, there are about 2-3 events per week here, so plenty to choose from.
In addition to that, i'll try to cycle 1000km in the summer and cross-country ski 100km in the winter. Usually, I won't make it, but it's good to have goals to reach for.

Same here. I do 'sports' tortoise style and try to enjoy the scenery. I did manage to loose about 20kg over the past few years though. One of my family members had to do exercises after a medical issue. He has always been active so he didn't break a sweat but a very fat person had lots of trouble with even the simplest things. To me it showed the importance to stay active.

Nice. Are you a paper target bench shooter?
Belonged to a club but sadly with our last move I am not in an area where I can easily do much besides making the high voltage probes from the cases. :-DD I did attempt to tie dye one a few years ago.

In fact at the time I think I asked what calibers you used.
Where do I start.....
Trap and Skeet.
Hunt vermin and bigger game.
Reload for everything.
Have private shotgun and rifle range out to 500yds
Avid student of things that go bang.
None of them really well. :(

Tomorrow, I do my yearly jog (seriously).

Isn't it quite easy to get hurt with this sport? You're trying to be as fast as possible in an unknown track, that sounds like ankle sprains, nasty bruises and what have ya. Seems interesting though.
-
Cycle on road, early am, twice weekly, lovely 20km distance 800foot vertical climb. Walk 2 dogs (Airedale terriors) 2-3x/wk 4-6km.

:-DD Same. Good thing I don't have to count on my marksmanship skills to feed us. I have a rock chucker. Some brass I have had since my teens. I have never tried skeet shooting but have always heard how fun it is. Now days I shoot a bow in the back yard and can maybe get 20 yards. After moving, I checked around. There really is nothing if you want to shoot high power. I heard there was a 50 yard outdoor range and a indoor pistol range as well.
-
Previously, rock/ice climbing (Alps, UK mountains), caving (UK, Austria), orienteering, radio orienteering (aka ARDF) (very confusing), scuba diving (various places around the world... fav place is Red Sea), parachuting (well you have to try it), Squash, Table Tennis but now I'm old and unfit... I just play Tennis.
-
It's just interesting to know, if you do some physical activity (not just sports) on a regular basis - what do you do?
I wrestle periodically with my conscience :-DD

Well, for me it is definitely football. I consider it my favorite sport, although it is very traumatic. I get together with friends every Sunday and play. After matches, I have to wear Elastic bandage (https://befit24.eu/us/sports-medicine-products-usa/elastic-bandage-usa.html) because I have a lot of bruises or breaks after games. But this is the essence of this sport. Fighting all over the field

I used to do a lot of hiking and bicycling, when I lived in the Bay Area especially, and although now I live elsewhere, I still keep my vintage bike running well and do a tiny little bit of riding.
But I'm terrified to bicycle much where I live now.
However, I still love to hike, and so far my knees, etc, are doing fine so I am pretty sure I could get back into good (hill climbing and) hiking shape if I had the opportunity to do more.
One of my New Years resolutions is to do lots more hiking.
Edit: Also, after reading the other posts I wanted to mention that the inexpensive and widely available polyphenol resveratrol *may* be helpful for bones and joints in a bunch of different ways. YMMV.
Try taking it 'buccally' which gets around a low rate of absorption in the gut significantly.
If you have medical issues of any kind also make sure you keep your doctor informed on whatever you do.

I hate the gym. I had a membership for many years and never went.
Summer 2017 I took up BMX racing (off road motocross style), and it didn't end well. Too bad, it was fun. I think I posted pictures of the plates and screws that are now in my wrist in the "what did you buy today" thread. Fortunately my wrist is back to at least 95%, a very good recovery. The only nagging issue is a little nerve damage to both palmar branch nerves, so my palm has no pain response, but I hardly notice any longer.
Just a few months ago I took up Karate. I train 3 times a week plus occasionally at home and I am loving it. At 43 years old, however, I am not in great shape. I'll need to work on strength and flexibility. My goal is a black belt before age 50.

I work on ships.
So appart from coffee time and eating time, I am running about up and down stairs, chainblocking, taking stuff apart then putting it back together with at least M16 bolts in an awkward position and having to go back and getting a bucket of slogging spanners because stuck...
I still try to hit the gym or the sauna every day to lossen up what got tight during the day.
I also eat healthy, we need a lot of energy so the easy fix at the end of a 12 hour shift is anything fried with cheese - not plates of vegetables, salad and fruits.
