what the hell is going on ? is this normal ?
« on: October 13, 2016, 10:43:46 pm »
i needed a FPGA chip for a project.. so went to SK farnell shop, picked one according to specs for the project.. the price looked OK-ish to me so ordered 2 of them one for the project and one as spare (just in case).
then i was searching some further info (app notes etc... ) and among google results there was a link to UK farnell shop.. clicked it and couldn't believe my eyes !  the exact chip i bought for 38 euro+VAT is sold by farnell in UK for 142pounds ! WTF ?? checked German site of farnell and it's 26 Euro in Germany !!! WTF ??
it's a Altera Cyclone IV GX chip - part number  EP4CGX30BF14C6N and attaching screenshots with all 3 sites open... it's simply beyond my understanding how could one company have so different pricing for the very same part across countries withing the EU... and it's the same part - same ID and same amount indicated as in stock.

FPGA pricing can be wierd - could be they are subject to pricing agreements in different countries.
Findchips shows a price between the 2, but no stock anywhere but Farnell
Hope you're not designing it into a product....

it's just a one-off , i'm aware that it will be discontinued (or probably already is) ;)  that FBGA169 package (1mm pitch) is not mentioned anywhere in the recent datasheets - it's replaced by UBGA169 (0.8mm pitch) so that's a clear indication that at least this very version is obsolete ;)

I've seen weird stuff like that too like chips on Amazon for like 60 bucks a pop when the same chip on Digikey is like $6.
