What to do with CRT VGA monitors
« on: March 31, 2011, 12:54:19 pm »
We have recently updated most of our computer monitors to LCD. This means we have a pile of perfectly good CRT monitors sitting in the corner. It seems a shame to just scrap them, but what else can we do with them?

I have an idea for one of them, robbing its EHT transformer and making a calibrated HV generator for ESD tests.

A couple years back I gave a 21" Nanao FX2-21 monitor to the Salvation Army.  Cost me over $3000USD new.  Damn it was heavy!

Check if they will blend?
Real Circuit design time in minutes= (2 + Nscopes) Testim + (40 +120 Kbrewski) Nfriends

Testim = estimated time in minutes Nscopes= number of oscilloscopes present Kbrewski = linear approx of the nonlinear beer effect Nfriends = number of circuit design friends present

I doubt you'll get anyone to take them off your hands. I regularly see monitors at the kerb awaiting rubbish collection.
I have a 76cm CRT TV I've been trying to give away but can't find any takers. It's too heavy to put out for rubbish collection  :)

On a serious note, here in the UK we have something called freecycle where people post onto a forum what they have to give away. Then its up to others to come and collect. I have used this service to get some free furniture ;) But also i have given away my old crt's and a bunch of old electronic test equipment. There is always someone that has a need for this stuff, some less fornate soles will be glad to take a CTR off you.

That's an idea, I'll give that a try, thanks.

Use it as a high quality display for a microcontroller project. I found that it's not too hard to generate vertical bar graphs with an 8-bit PIC.

Dropping off a roof is great fun (as long as someone else cleans up the mess.)

Just like what Bob Pease (former staff scientist of National) did on his computer see Figure 12.1 page 145 Troubleshooting Analog Circuits ISBN 0-7506-9949-8
