What Would be Reason for Cordless Screwdriver to Fail?
« on: November 20, 2021, 10:45:54 am »
Hello,

I had B&D screwdriver for over a decade and today when I wanted to use it, it failed.
There was strange liquid on it but so was on other tool inside my tool chest so I am not sure if liquid belongs to screwdriver.
It has been stored without batteries and I have not used it much.
How can such tool fail without being used? Used it a few times for short duration.

There is a small steel bar with notch on back of the head so maybe I can open it?

Corroded switches/contacts, gummed up bearings?

No. It says it on the outside: 'Black&Decker'
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

I assume you've verified all the batteries are good?

I've taken that model apart before and fixed it for my neighbor, twice now. Removing that U clip will allow the gearhead to be pulled off. Tilt the black part down to avoid dropping gears on the table. Once the gearhead and battery clip are removed, you can split the red case carefully. It's electrically simple -- there's nothing in there but the motor, battery and switch contacts, which can be further disassembled. The problem is almost always bent or oxidized contacts.

I think you need to download the latest software update for it to work right.  With the latest update, not only can the manufacturer email you with failure diagnostics, you can run your screw driver entirely with the app just by touching the screen...

(Sorry...  can't resist.   But I think we can all use some humor in our life.)

Not all B&D are, er, B&D-alike. Got a battery drill which is still excellent despite the nicads (second set) being pretty much dead. Also a jolly expensive vacuum which is very decent.

I think it must be like HP where they used to be good but are now shit, except for a very few diamonds that've been overlooked.

Contacts are acting strange. Reverse button when pushed with no pressure does not start motor but when I release it, it starts motor for a brief moment only.
When I push reverse button hard, it works okay. With forward button same thing except when I push left edge it works good but when I push center or right edge, it does not work. I have 70% alcohol and 99% isopropyl alcohol. Maybe I should rub contacts?

B&D say no more.

I saw $16 sale on Banggood for Topshak rechargeable 4v screwdriver. Locally there is a sale of B&D 3.6v for $42. I guess for you both are same?
