What's going on in Microchip's marketing department?
« on: February 03, 2014, 02:59:58 am »
:=\Is it just me, Microchip's maketing department is weird, to say the least. Their product videos tend to be really boring but their online ads are always interesting. They always manage to make me click, but after I click the ad, there's nothing really great on the webpage.  :palm:

I don't really know how to describe what's wrong with them, but all the videos and promotional material make me go  :wtf:

-Their latest video has a nice presenter, I do prefer a profesional presenter over an engineer or marketing guy who is shy of cameras, but the script confuses the heck out of me  :=\ By the way she reads the script I'm guessing she's no engineer.

I don't think she has any idea what she just read.

I'd say she's hired presentation talent, given a script and some guidelines on how to read it.
"No worries"?? Did Dave write the script?
Maybe Dave should offer his services as a technical presenter :)
Was it really supposed to do that?

At least I got to a video with Wayne Freeman who is an actual product marketing manager, and he was a lot better.
Still got that tacky scripted marketing feel though.

They may as well have just posted the text from her auto-cue.

Apparently being able to read Microchip must think she is smarter than some of their customers.

She looks and sounds like a weather presenter.
Just imagine a synoptic chart behind her :)
Was it really supposed to do that?

She reminds me a bit of Vicki Butler-Henderson. And I think she is doing a good job, taking the subject and shitty text she has to read into account. And boy, if I would have to say "PIC twelf eL-eF  fifteen fifty-two" I would want auto-cue, too.

It seems the actress did learn the script and is following stage directions from the script, emphasizing words and playing enthusiastic where required.  She is professionally doing the job she was hired for. The problem IMHO is the job. WhoTF needs such videos? Does Microchip think the target audience is already that retarded that a simple fact-sheet is no longer enough? 1:30 of video filled with hot air ...  :wtf:

I think their budget would have been better spent on a slick animated display and presentation of the features. Having a talking head spout numbers and figures simply puts the audience to sleep.
Was it really supposed to do that?

It would have come across infinity better if they had got Jeri Ellsworth to reword what the wanted to say and then read it out :)

Or what about when you want to sell a chip with a particular feature you show that feature with the chip in a real circuit? And if possible not by using some dev board, but some real-world prototype. Show that it works, give a quick overview of the circuit and then point to app note XYZ with a detailed circuit description, schematic, PCB layout, software, etc.

I would agree, showing off applications of new chips would make me be far more likely to stay and watch, and possibly choose it for my project (as they are showing it working)

as far as using a dev board to show it off, that would be fine as it shows exactly what layout they are using which at-least for me with some switch-mode converters from TI, means i can be reasonably safe that the circuit is going to work and what small telltales they may have skipped in the app-note

She's not just in their latest video. Check out their Youtube channel and you'll see that she has been their "official presenter" for about a year now.

Or what about when you want to sell a chip with a particular feature you show that feature with the chip in a real circuit? And if possible not by using some dev board, but some real-world prototype. Maybe something like this:

That is a classic.
Heres what I think is the original:

Yea, just looked it up, this is the original video. Apparently it was ad hoc filmed right after they had finished filming something else.

Slightly relevant?

Maintain your old electronics!  If you don't preserve it, it could be lost forever!

Well, I'm not sure if those guys are the same ones involved with the other boring videos.
