What's going to happen to NATIONAL?
« on: June 09, 2011, 07:27:00 am »
Hi All

I heard something about a takeover from TI and NATIONAL. Apparently TI is buying NATIONAL for $6.5 in cash.
My question is, will we, the consumers of the products that they sell, still be able to buy NATIONAL parts. And if so, for how long.
I didn't check if this subject has already been "ranted about." So I'm sorry if I'm the subject has been worn out.

Almost certainly for all parts in the short term, but I'd expect some consolidation and then announcement of some discontinuation and subsequent calls for "last buys".
Long term is anyones guess.

Thanks Dave

So will there be any sudden change in the cost of national products, in an attempt from TI to get the "burden" of NATIONAL products off their back. How does it normally work with large takeovers like this one

usually with these sorts of take-overs there is no immediate change, as it takes many many months, sometimes years to actually figure out what they are going to do. With thousands of product it's not easy.
And you can bet your bottom dollar that the high profile customers will have a big say in what parts stay current.

If you need an indication, check out how many Burr-Brown or Unitrode parts TI still offers. TI bought Unitrode in 1999 and Burr-Brown in 2000. TI still carries a good bunch of their parts and even refers to the original company names in the datasheets.

TI still keep the Unitrode data and lecture material on SMPS design on the website. The technology has changed but the underlying theory is still relevent.

I'll start a ponzi scheme to raise money and pay the investors back when I get the company.

Damn I can be like Bernie Madoff except without the prison term. :D
