The first picture could be said "injecting hum into circuit with finger, no osc handy, and measuring level with meter".


Second picture, ummm, well, waiting for intern to attach needle test probe to mu bannana.
Tek 575 curve trcr top shape, Tek 535, Tek 465. Tek 545 Hickok clone, Tesla Model S,  Ohio Scientific c24P SBC, c-64's from club days, Giant electric bicycle, Rigol stuff, Heathkit AR-15's. Heathkit ET- 3400a trainer&interface. Starlink pizza.

Unless I'm missing something I don't see anything wrong with the second. Sure, it's a slightly awkward probe, but it does the job.

Maybe the problem with it is because the banana probe has too much exposed metal for the QFP pin pitch...

Oh my goodness :o, makes you wonder if there is another 'stock photo' of someone measuring mains with a soldering iron  :scared:
The odd multimeter or 2 or 3 or 4...or........can't remember !.

Would it be the lack of loaded decoupling caps?
Not much point testing for shorts unless the board is fully loaded?
