What's going on with Digikey, Mouser and Newark slowing down?
(1/1)
jayk:
I order a decent amount of parts from Digikey, Mouser and Newark (here in the US) - generally 1-2 small orders a week for various R&D stuff. Up until a few weeks ago my orders would generally go out the same day. But lately all three seem to have fallen apart... small orders are now taking 3 or more days just to ship. I'm talking about parts that are in stock and, until recently, would have shipped the same day. Have they really gotten so much busier? Or maybe they've lost a bunch of employees? Anyone else notice this?
KE5FX:
Mouser was affected by the recent Texas winter storm and its accompanying power-outage crisis, and had to shut down for at least a couple of days due to that. I believe they also experienced a COVID-19 outbreak that took some essential personnel out of action.
Not sure what's up with DigiKey. They are very well accustomed to bad weather up there, unlike the Texans.

Could be demand is starting to pick back up as things start to open back up, coupled with the ongoing supply chain and logistics challenges posed by the pandemic.

There are worldwide shipping delays due to covid, it has definitely slowed down getting parts from manufacturers, without adding in what happens in delays when an employee tests positive

The entire distribution industry is seeing up-and-to-the-right record demand for months now. I know at least two distributors are actually pulling large chunks of office staff and director/manager/vp's into picking, packing, and put-away for significant hours. Demand combined with covid precautions are definitely limiting supply chains in general, and the ability to staff up to meet demand is limited. Digi-Key, for example, employs 4000 people in a city of 8800 in a generally rural part of the state. It is looking to hire up to 150 people a month and that's for jobs with starting total compensation of $69k for people walking in with a high school diploma.
