What's that "glue" used to fix bodge wires?
« on: January 07, 2023, 12:50:51 am »
Hello all!
I always see that bodge wires on PCBs are often fixed with some kind of glue or adhesive.
It's not always the same type, some times is white silicon gunk, other times it's a precise drop of something clear (that's what I want to achieve).
See attachments.
There is a precise product to be used for that kind of thing?

The top pic appears to be clear hot glue.

Might be UV glue. You set it with a UV light. I have some and it looks like that clear example.
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

it is not clear glue, too transparent. And hot glue is very hard to apply in minimum quantities like in the first pic, for me that is not hot glue.

This is hot glue.

It might be clear electronic grade silicone.
Touching it to see how pliable it is should tell you if it's silicone vs a hard UV cure glue.

Greek letter 'Psi' (not Pounds per Square Inch)

Likely a single-component epoxy in a small syringe.  You can get heat-cured or UV-cured versions.
A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

What do you mean? "Clear" means "transparent".

Plenty of glues advertise "clear" that is ok for a thin bonding application but end up a little milky in bulk cure. Which is why the industry had to add "optically clear" as a new category. Bonus points for refractive index matching.

Search Amazon for “5 second Uv glue”. Works well on PCB bridge wires.

UV curable coatings and glues do not contain volatile organic compounds (VOC), at least not in any significant quantity.

I know that, but the line I was replying to was saying that it’s too transparent to be clear?

NorthridgeFix calls it conformal coating and uses a UV lamp to set it. Dunno what the benefits are of using UV I suppose so that you don't melt your wires and the wires on the PCB don't move around while they are setting due to the wind from the heat gun.
One big benefit is that it cures very quickly, yet doesn’t have the problems of superglue (like having very little time to work with it). It’s also much easier to remove uncured glue.

The main benefit is that it's thermally stable and non conductive. It's the same as liquid type solder mask. Superglue is a bit electrically conductive and better not try to heat it, fumes are extremely nasty.

The proper designation of this is 'wire tacking adhesive'.
