Duratool D00674 vacuum desoldering station any good?
« on: July 31, 2012, 09:56:33 am »
I was looking for a soldering station anyway and after seeing the latest video from Mike, I thought why not buy a station with a vacuum desoldering gun :)
Question is, is this station any good? Has anybody experience with this brand in genial?

I found a video on youtube about another vacuum station from this brand, and it looks ok... at least for the price.

If you mean this one I bought one about a month ago as I'd acquired a couple of boxes of PCBs to strip for parts.

It's certainly much better that a soldering iron plus desolder pump. I needed to swap a couple of conectors around on a Lecroy 'scope front panel and got both off the respective PCBs with almost no damage - I'd never have been able to do that with an iron+hand pump.

That's not to say it's perfect - the construction is a bit flimsy and when I first got mine the vacum tube was pinched in the handle so I had to dismantle it to get it working.

Also the solder does tend to stick to the spring inside which is supposed to collect it - this makes cleaning a little tricky. I use an iron to melt the solder.

Any tool that has a heated hollow bit is miles better than a sucker for pth boards. Differences are minly in robustness and how often it needs de-gunking.
Youtube channel:Taking wierd stuff apart. Very apart.
Mike's Electric Stuff: High voltage, vintage electronics etc.
Day Job: Mostly LEDs

Yes, I do miss the nice Weller DS701C I used to use, even if I had to clean the chamber every 100 holes, and the filters were glass fibre nicked from the sheet metal shop when they were not looking. About the only thing that could undo the 21 layer flexiboards without damaging too many of them.

It is a rebadged Zhongdi http://www.china-zhongdi.com/zd-917.htm which is an older Zhongdi model. Opinions about Zhongdi quality varies. I thing they produce good enough quality for hobby work, but I wouldn't want one in a pro shop where it might run 24*7.
