For me as of late it's been every time to study. Especially when the instructor decides to dump 4 chapters worth of BJT amplifiers in a day. Cause you know, WHY NOT!? We only just covered BJT's and their various biasing methods yesterday! |O
A few pints is pretty junk for real productive work but god does it take the edge off.
OH! and soldering. Soldering with a beer gets intense, like beer goggle intense :-/O. your nose is an inch from the board as you focus desperately to hit the right pad. It feels like an eternity passes and realize you should probably get the tip off your component cause not only might you fry it but you just had your other finger way way too close to the pad. *sigh* and then you do it 60 to 70 more times because god that's a lot of components to sol... :=\
1 hour you wake up to the smell of singed hair :scared: and there's another burn mark on the bench |O. *sigh* good times...

From the title, I thought you meant a cup of tea... but I must say my cuppa has never given me any of the problems you've mentioned.
Never have found any alcoholic beverage I can tolerate the taste of. Not inspired to try, either - especially with anecdotes like this. I can burn myself well enough without (but I will add that those occasions get fewer and less severe over time).
-
Maybe that's why Jim Williams doesn't drink beer. Dave Jones doesn't either. Nor do I.
-
After you turn the soldering iron off and wash you hands is a good time for a beer.
I have a personal rule of no food or drink at the soldering station. In addition to the risk of spills, there's at least some risk of ingesting a bit of lead residue. Lead poisoning may not be very likely, but it's a really nasty problem if it happens. I really want to take reasonable precautions to avoid it. Personally, I don't go so far as avoiding lead solder, but I do make a practice of always washing hands between handling the solder and handling food or drink.

I've heard that if you study whilst drunk then you should do your exams whilst drunk. Something about having the same chemicals in your brain is good for recall.
Give it a try and let us know how you go. ;)

I see nothing wrong with this flawed logic.
-
My testing only revealed that studying while drunk and doing exams with a hangover is not pleasant.
-
I'm afraid I cannot offer any data on any permutations of the various states.
-
i can attest to the same results about hangovers and tests....and work. was an X-ray technician before coming back to training and i tell you what. taking abdominal x-rays of a person of considerable girth and fold is not something you do while hung over.
I've wanted to try taking a test here while a tad tipsy but unfortunately/fotunately the military looks down on such shenanigans.
-
Probably the girth of the specimen should teach you a lesson not to become one.

It's called State Dependent Memory (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State-dependent_memory).
I can speak to its validity from experience. My pool game is much better after a few pints...

Maybe the question isn't when, but how much!

The Ballmer peak huh? Well, i guess rhat explains this:

As for alcohol, soldering on caffeine is "hard mode", whereas alcohol is a "performance enhancing drug". In official sports, this is well known, such as sharpshooting. (Calms the nerves -- less shake, better aim.)
I find the early stages of design can be better on alcohol. But the implementation stages, not so much (needs more concentration to make sure things are done consistently and fully).
As for preference, that varies by person, some by preference and some by tolerance (some, it just doesn't do anything for, or only makes sick).

Agreed. Same reason why friends don't let friends drink and derive.
-
IMHO the proper time for a brew is "meatspace social time" in the company of good friends, NOT when you are soldering, designing, coding or sharpshooting :palm:

Re. Ballmer, he must've taken some pretty good pingaz before that presentation. 💊 💊 :scared: 💊 💊

OMG I can see why Apple got traction with that guy at the helm.
He really didn't fill the hip and cool space.
Steve Jobs must've consciously decided to be the opposite of him.

Because I want a drunk guy with a deadly accurate rifle.

Im Tee Total, not even a choice I made, just not interested in alcohol. Have tried it but just does not interest me in the slightest poisoning myself :D
Tea or Coffee I will drink however.

Are you nuts!? i just became a microsoft fan cause of this. True inspiration this guy is. A real role model. Now if I can just find out who provided his LSD I'll be on my way to developing developing developing!!

I used to work for a telecommunications company during the dot com bubble where they had free booze, free soft drink, pizzas, chips etc anytime. They went bust for some reason. I found after having a Crown Lager in the morning, I could cut heaps of good code really quickly, no joke. Cannot speak about the effect of coffee on code writing though, because I have never had a cup of coffee in my entire life and doubt I ever will.
-
Another that doesn't really like alcohol or coffee,
However i have defiantly come across the twilight rush many times, where your about 5% asleep, your mind goes quiet and the code just flows from your fingers.
I have found having the air slightly colder with a heat source near my arms and feet brought it on more often.
some of my smartest ideas i don't even understand because of that damn effect!

I remember discovering coffee and its effects at uni.
In the morning before a 3 hour exam and I had 3 cups of coffee before I started. Nailed that exam.
That afternoon another 3 hour exam, so I managed a couple more cups of the magic potion, making five for the day.
After the second round of caffeine kicked in, I felt so jittery I was struggling to read the questions let alone answer them.
Didn't do very well in that exam, but was a lot more careful after that.
