« on: March 27, 2021, 02:50:01 am »
Where do you buy your electronic parts from? Digikey, Mouser, LCSC, fry's electronics, etc. I get mine from digikey. and sometimes from my local fry's electronics.

sometimes from my local fry's electronics.

I think that's over with...

Where you get parts will depend a lot on what you need.  I repair a wide variety of stuff, so I need a wide variety of source.

For 'normal' new parts, Mouser/DigiKey/Newark, in that order.

Scrounging for rarer parts I've used eBay, Aliexpress and Amazon with pretty good luck--I can't remember any substandard deals on parts.

For interesting stuff for projects, don't overlook places like All Electronics or Electronic Goldmine.

And then there's my garage.  Sometimes the stuff I'm looking for is actually in there somewhere.

The parts world may get interesting pretty soon for the production people.  Between Covid, burning factories and a traffic jam on the Suez Canal, there may be some nasty surprises coming up.
A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

Arrow for special parts that are (relatively) hard to find, Amazon and Ebay when fakes are not likely to be a major concern and sometimes have insane deals. That said, I most often buy subassemblies like gadgets to hack since I have quite a collection of individual components from the past.

Is the Suez Canal issue expected to impact Aliexpress or LCSC shipping to the US?

China to US shipping routes lay in Pacific ocean.

LCSC and TME - mostly connectors, switches and passives, some semiconductors. Mouser, Digikey, Arrow, Farnell for the rest. Alibaba for ordering some connectors in large quantities.

Fry's? Have you tried recently? As far as I know they're gone, all locations closed and liquidated.

I buy parts from Digikey and Mouser mostly, I was buying from Arrow while they had free shipping but otherwise they aren't competitive.

Mainly Mouser. Occasionally Digikey or Newark. Amazon if I need a $2 part tomorrow with free shipping. eBay/AliExpress a couple of times for Chinese DDS boards.

I usually buy new parts from Mouser and Farnell - more rarely from Digikey and Jameco.

I also get some older and less known NOS parts from a local online reseller called BG Micro

Doesn't mean nuthin'

Somebody on here a few weeks ago was saying their stuff went on a world tour, via Sweden apparently, courtesy of UPS.

In Germany we have Reichelt that is fine for lots of consumer demands.
(I studied some years in that city and still remember me visiting some relatives there (when I was little) where my uncle took me with him to go shopping for some small parts, where they were still a very small shop back then- about 30+ years ago...)

You did. So that's a paradox. But I was about to mention them.

I buy my electronic parts mainly from local sellers (both b&m and online) I don't have the patience to wait for weeks.

If I want it quickly, DigiKey is the best option, they have a low free shipping threshold and free next day (sometimes same day!), though they haven't been as fast as usual lately.

Otherwise generally LCSC if available. Mouser or Newark often have lower total BOM cost than DK so if I'm not in a rush I might choose them.

I have also used Future Electronics a few times, but their selection isn't nearly as good as DK or Mouser, and the passives and whatnot I used to get there are cheaper from LCSC. Occasionally they'll have some connector I need or something at like 1/2 the price of DK so it's sometimes still worth it to have a peek. Good vendor though, and haven't seen a mention yet  :-+.

Plug for OctoPart which makes figuring this out relatively easy.

I do not know if it has changed, but some years later when Frau Reichelt was still running the show, the main entrance delivered you immediately in front of the will call counter, which was staffed entirely with handsome men. ;D
