Where to buy Hydrogen Peroxide(10-30%) these days?
« on: December 27, 2020, 09:34:21 pm »
Used to buy 30% peroxide at the drugstore back in the day, to do some copper clad etching together with muriatic acid.
Now I need some  to kill a mold that i've discovered behind my bathtub.
I need more than 10% concentration as I already tried commercial cleaners with that amount and they don't work for me.

A better idea would be doing a root-cause analysis.
The mold is not there by accident, and the "just kill it with poison" strategy is short-lived at best.

It's usually there because something stays moist for too long. Regardless of why mold appeared it is still necessary to get rid of it and peroxide is relatively safe as it breaks down into water and oxygen. I usually use a bit of chlorine bleach diluted in water for this sort of thing.

Last time I bought peroxide I was able to buy 40 volume (not 40%) at a local beauty supply store but the last time I tried all they had was the creme form which is useless. I think it got a lot harder to get after there were a couple of fairly high profile incidents involving MEKP or related substances. One of those annoying cases where something is available for decades and then some idiot ruins it for everybody.

Just use bleach, or mold remover.. Peroxide is controlled substance in most of the Western world..

I had some bullshit growing in the sink pipe that chlorine etc would not touch and it stayed slimy and I almost went in there with a god damn bottle brush but I decided to pour 1/2 cup of 30% h2o2 in there. it foamed like a volcano and cleaned it right up without getting me dirty and contaminating my cleaning tools

excellent stuff. also use it for cleaning stuff like the home water strainer and parts when I change the filter out

the other cleaning chemicals are basically fooling around with money for the worst jobs IMO. this stuff smells better also. gets rid of yellowing on plastic much better then bleach cleaners (always mix bleach with some soap when using for scrubbing mold btw). but the hydrogen peroxide like burns it clean, it is outstandingly effective on sinks and the crevice that forms between the sink and the drain pipe.

smelly U -trap? best solution. it really cleans it out great, I tried this before with the home depot chemicals and they were junk. I suppose its bad for the septic but if you ever had a smelly shower or sink you know how much trouble that can cause. especially if you are already nauseous when you brush your teeth. all these environmentally friendly chemicals are making for a moldy stained world

Let me clarify, not so much behind as at the back, Hope that these 2 pic will make it clear:

As you can see keeping it dry may be a problem.
I know I have to remove some grout here and reseal it with  a new "silicone", but I still have to kill that mold growing there !

Use mold remover on cement based grouting. Rules number one for the bathroom: don't use silicone. Sooner or later it will be black through and through due to mold growing into it. Cement based grouting doesn't have that problem.

In Toronto/GTA area - Sally Beauty Supplies chain stores,  both liquid and cream 40% peroxide.
But you will be better off by using toilet paper and laundry bleach. Take a length of toilet paper and spiral it in a tight rope. Place on the mold and moisten with bleach. Push slightly on it to make good contact with mold. Leave for 6-8 hours, Add bleach once in a while to keep the paper rope wet. Then remove the paper and wash the area. Cheaper then peroxide and very effective. Yes it will smell while being worked so ventilate the house.
Many mold killers use bleach anyways and those which do not are less effective.

Afraid they may be closed due to "lockdown".
And I've tried most of the "civilian" methods already.

Well if laundry bleach did not kill it you may have a hopeless case or the mold is dead already :-//

That will be 40 volume (12%) peroxide, NOT 40% peroxide. 40% peroxide is very dangerous stuff and not the sort of thing a civilian is likely to have access to outside of a lab environment. Why they still use that odd unit I don't know.

That's what I initially used, but I found later that ordinary drugstore 3% peroxide works just fine for that, and is less likely to damage the plastic. I also found that rather than mixing up the gel, I get better results by simply mixing the peroxide and oxy-boost in a spray bottle and then sit outside in a lawn chair giving the thing I'm trying to lighten a few mists now and then to keep it damp. Usually it's about the right amount of time to have a beer.

To remove "mold" on silicone just use household bleach (2-7% sodium hypochlorite), the only clue is that it needs 12-24 hours of contact (overnight). Soak some toilet paper or tissue in bleach and leave it on the mold overnight. The silicone will become white as new with no signs of rot/mold.

Concur on the household bleach approach. MSDS here https://www.thecloroxcompany.com/wp-content/uploads/cloroxregular-bleach12015-06-12.pdf

I would add that I have used a mixture of bleach and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to form a thick paste which can be easily applied. The baking soda has no appreciable cleaning effect here but is a "holder" for the bleach - others have mentioned tissue paper for the same idea. After application, strips of plastic food wrap (Saran wrap type stuff) can be placed to prevent drying out. You can determine how long to leave it applied, but the few times that I have had to do this, 1-2 hours has worked fine.

Hydrogen peroxide is sold in cosmetics, if I'm not mistaken, to lighten hair. It can be made from tablets peroxide, which is sold in the pharmacy. To destroy mold, you can use tablets of the antibiotic furatsilin. But it is impossible to defeat mold, it will reappear - this is one of the most stable forms of life.
And sorry for my English.

I've never had any problem removing bath/shower mold using ordinary mold remover,  but the secret seems to be to spray it on and leave it on far longer than the manufacturer suggests - 10 minutes is nonsense, try more like 4-8 hours.  Rinse and reapply until the mold is gone.

that solution is going to stink like crazy. bleach really burns your nostrils

I recommend the hydrogen peroxide cleaners in general over bleach, but they have been perpetually out of stock since this pandemic began. For most things the formula sold in h2o2 bleach replacements works fine for tiles and stuff with much less side effects from chlorine.

@alpher: Simple, the caulk (or mastic as Brits say) is too far gone. Chase it out and replace with a sanitary grade silicone. Sanitary grade means it's anti-mould, and should last a good five years before it blackens. Not only will this make your bath look new but, it will also keep the NSA from adding your address to their list of innocent civilians who didn't know what else you can make in the bath with H2O2.

Suppliers of cleaning chemicals have it, and lots of other goodies.
Look for places like this locally:-

But grout won't seal a bathtub.

Be careful with silicone caulk designed for bathroom use.  It may well contain anti-microbial poisons, and must not be used for other purposes, such as dishwasher repairs, where the poison can contact food or drinking water.  Read the label: I remember a case years ago where the caulk was used on a dishwasher and contained arsenic.
