Where to get solid core wire for breadboard in Australia?
« on: November 23, 2012, 02:37:12 pm »
I've been searching on Jaycar, littlebirdelectronics, eBay and some other electrical stores in Australia but I couldn't find some solid core wire for breadboards. From the internet, it seems that the 22 gauge would fit into most breadboards. This one from sparkfun looks the closest to what I used in my first semester in electrical engineering (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11367). I saw some with stranded wires and pins sticking out of them but I much prefer to be able to trim them down so I won't have a messy breadboard. Does anyone know where I can find something that is similar to the one that sell on Sparkfun? The reason I want it to be local is because I want to see whether it's going to work with my breadboard or not. Thank you.

22 AWG worked in every breadboard I have used.

5 meters of Ethernet cable makes lots of breadboard cable provided you willing to 'manufacture' them.

Have you tried a search for something like "breadboard jumpers" on eBay? I found these: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=hook+up+wire&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313&_nkw=breadboard+jumpers&_sacat=0

Exactly what I was thinking Nukie. 8 colours as well, and you have a choice on making buses out of them as well. I use it as speaker cabling, for low power, simply by using all 4 pairs in parallel, and then soldering the ends into a single wire pair end. Cheap ( or free if you do networking, I used nearly 3km of cable this year alone and I am not a network cable puller, just part time and when needed) and good quality copper in them. Will handle 2A at least in open air as well., it normally dies at somewhere over 10A after the insulation has melted off.

Your can buy in suitable wire - OR - just make them yourself by stripping down 'cat 5' solid conductor ethernet cable

Some higher quality Ethernet cables (not sure if it's CAT 5 or CAT 6) are actually made from very tiny Litz wire, which presumably reduces attenuation at higher frequencies but makes the wire completely worthless for breadboarding.

True, they come in multistrand core or single copper core, the single core are usually much harder to bend but they stay in shape after you bend them. Multistrand are more flexible and less tendency to stay put.

Aren't you just talking about solid versus stranded wire? Stranded wire is not higher quality, it's just better at flexing, and is usually used for patch cables or cables from wall outlet to device. HF performance is substantially worse than solid, which is why it's only used for shorter distances.

Wires from ethernet cables are a bit stiff and break easily after being bent a few times for my taste. I like the pre-bent wires (like this). They are fairly sturdy, color coded for length and the 90 degrees bends makes the breadboard more organized than loose flying wires.

element14 sell rolls of solid core insulated 22AWG in different colours.
