Holy chip score, Batman!
« on: January 11, 2018, 05:13:05 am »
So I recently picked these up from someone who was going to dump them.

There's got to be hundreds of them, maybe thousands. I'm 90% sure the garbage bags aren't anti-static, but I think I can afford to juice a few.

7400 series, 8000 series CPUs, ROM, RAM, ADCs, DACs, PLDs; you name it. It's going to take me ages to go through and sort it all.

Random sample handful:

DM74LS85N (National Semiconductor)
SN74ALS27N (Texas Instruments)
MSM5832RS (Oki)
1501824 (IBM?)
2708JL-45 (Texas Instruments)
MC14520B (Motorola)
F509506D (Intel)
Z80A (Zilog)

What kind of fun things should I build?

I bet when you are done you will end up sending 90% or more into the trash, just like the original owner.  So the first thing you do is buy black garbage bags so that no one can see and perpetuate the problem.

I've got tons of this sort of thing.  Chips to generate 40x80 video graphics on RS-170 monitors.  1 kbit (SIC) RAM chips.  And other similar stuff.  Too good to throw away.  Too worthless or difficult to use.

Looks like the stock from a vintage computer repair shop or something. Perhaps you could start a new one. Or maybe make vintage computer or arcade machine board kits.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'll likely never touch 99% of these, much less use it for something. In the meantime, it'll still be fun to go through and see what sort of ideas come up.

Sell them on Ebay, someone out there would want them.

Fran would love to have those numitrons.

I keep hearing people say they threw away or plan to throw away a bunch of old ICs so I'll just put this here. If you have a pile of 74xx logic ICs or memory devices in the US that are destined for the bin I'll pay postage to take them off your hands, USPS flat rate boxes make it economical. I repair classic arcade games and other vintage gear and build retro projects so I'm regularly paying good money for stocks of these parts, some of which are getting hard to find. Somebody actually sent me a box of TTL chips a few weeks ago and I've already used several of them.

FYI those Numitron tubes are quite valuable, they generally fetch ~$20-$40 each in good condition.
